How often and how soon after chicks have hatched should you out the nesting box? i'm conscious of not keeping the babies away from mum for too long and too soon.

It all depends on how many chicks are in the box and the hen, if she is a clean or mucky hen! from an early age I handle the chicks, the hens can be nasty, I pick them out and put into a clean nest box or put chicks in a large bowl and put mum in the breeding cage. Then clean the nest box out!! some hens really don't like being bothered, but others don't care about the nest boxes being cleaned!!

As a rule of thumb, I don't clean when there are still unhatched eggs in the nest box, because I don't like to handle the eggs. Once all eggs hatched, I replace wood shavings every other day. But as Gaile said, it depends a lot on number of chicks and cleanliness of the hen.
