Can anyone advise please? Bertie is approx. 5 years old. We were sitting quietly watching TV when Bertie started to flap around in his cage. He was trying to pull at his leg and when I checked him I noticed that his leg ring had slipped over the joint. I have tried to gently move it but 'elbow/knee' will not let it pass back down and I'm afraid to bend this the wrong way. I can't get to the avian vet until Monday, is there anything I can do or will he be OK until then? The ring is moving around the upper leg quite freely at the moment. Thank you, Jan.x

I did forget to add that the ring is not an 'unbroken circle' but is a kind of pinched together kind of affair with a space in it. Jan.x

Thank you for your reply Mick. I can't cut it off as I have no tools or the knowledge to do that I will be trying vaseline or margerine to gently work at it in a moment as our avain vet is not available until Monday. Jan.x

I've done it! Just a little Vaseline worked around the ring and with Bertie's co-operation, bless him, I managed to work it VERY gently over the knuckle I think that experience would be referred to as 'on a wing and a prayer!' lol. Phew... what a relief, Jan.x

using your finger nails you can open the ring at the joint , this will allow you to slide it over the knuckle

Thank you both and I'll remember to open it that way if it happens again Barrie. Think I just panicked when I spotted what had happened as it has never done this before. Will keep a very close eye on it in the future though. Jan.x

Glad all is well with Bertie and his leg-ring. What sort of acrobatics was the little guy doing to manage that? Reminds me of all the stories with little kids putting their fingers where they never should.....

Is it fine to take it off(the leg band) and leave it off? I have a budgie who KEPT itching it ALL day long....so I took it off. It was almost bleeding or I woudn't have.

The leg ring is only there as an identifier, LTB. Unless you want to show your budgies or keep track of which budgies came from which breeder, they don't serve any other purpose, especially for pet birds.

every time I get a new budgie wearing a ring, I will try to take it off if I can, especially if it's the split type. Otherwise, on my next visit to the vet (depending on the individual budgie and how much stress I think it'll cause them) I take them along and ask the vet to clip it off. Glad you managed to sort it out

Hopefully next year we can get Jasmines bracelet clipped off, I kinda wish people who sell to pet stores wouldn't put those on the birds since it can cause more trouble than it's worth.
