Old Pecker. I've just had some success with my non-vegetable eater with a small slice of corn on the cob pinned to the cage side.
He won't touch carrot yet, and I've been trying for some time.

Well what do you know, corn on the cob was my next attempt. I bought some corn on the cob at the supermarket, I like it myself. Of course I won't serve his like I have it, hot and draped in butter (well margarine, spread or whatever).

Raw veggies, not cooked, of course. Corn is one thing I find does go off fairly quickly, and starts to smell, so a couple of hours and then remove it. And in my climate it attracts ants. But budgies usually love it.

Well the corn didn't work either. Joey will not even touch anything other than millet and seeds. I have tried everything that has been mentioned throughout the site like peanut butter, seeding grass, corn on the cob, you name it I have tried it. When I put it in the bars of his cage he just sits and looks at it, when he's ready he goes for his seed. I do leave whatever it is that I put in the bars and keep an eye on him from a distance so that I am not putting him off. I did remove some corn from the cob and put it in his seed bowl. He just worked his way round it. Toast may be the next thing to try.

If you've got seeding grass, one thing to try is to hang up quite a large bunch that's dripping wet. The water encourages them to wash by rubbing themselves in the wet leaves. If he does that, he might try to eat some. You can do the same with a bunch of wet spinach, basil, parsley or anything leafy.

Thank you Stace. I will try the grass again as there is quite a bit of it growing around the edge of my lawn, which needs cutting again. The thing is keeping things fresh for long enough. I am also very tenacious when I set my stall out so Joey has a battle on his claws when it comes to that. The toast is now clipped to the side of the cage. That can stay there quite a while today as it won't go off for a while.

I tend to collect a big bunch, put in the fridge, and just give bits of it at a time. It keeps for quite a while that way.

Can I just suggest you try sticking to the same thing for several days. I think if you keep changing the food item the bird never gets chance to get used to seeing it and never builds up the courage to approach it. Imagine how it would feel, every day a new "thing" is thrust into your house, something you have never seen before that sits there invading your space, then just as you get used to seeing it, it's gone and replaced by another wired object. Try putting the same food stuff in for a few days, give Joey chance to get used to seeing it there. We don't put new toys in every day and expect them to play with it straight away, we expect to give them time to get used to it, why not the same with food?

Oooops! Of course you are correct Starlingqueen. I have been going by what I have misread in that budgies are inquisitive. I had expected Joey to be inquisitive and test what was put there, even if he didn't eat any of it. I have this very morning gathered a clump of dandelion leaves from the lawn, washed them and hung them in the cage. As soon as I let go he waddled along the perch and had a little nibble, and waddled back to the other side of the cage. That is a first. I will of course slow down a bit and refrain from mowing the lawn so the dandelions can flourish. I think I may have found something he is at least interested in. Fingers crossed.

It's not just you oldpecker, I see it happen all the time on lots of forums. People seem to think because it's food a bird will rush over to it and devour it, they are often baffled and disappointed when it doesn't happen so they try a new food and continue until they finally give up and declare their bird doesn't like veg. I think I might make a new post about this subject. You have inspired me to share my thoughts. I'm so pleased Joey has tried the dandelion. Keep up the good work. Often once they have sampled the first food, they will try the new things you add more readily.
