When cleaning the big cage this morning I got thinking about whether I could modify the feeding cups that came with the cage. They are just too deep and with feeding pellets the advice is to provide small amounts at a time and store in the fridge. So I don't want to just fill up the containers.
The advantages of the integrated ones are they being set in they are protected from poo hazards, and it would avoid other containers taking up space and being vulnerable to having the contents scattered by clambering buds.
I was wondering what material I could use to block off the bottom 3/4 of the cups. Any ideas out there? Things that came to mind were scrunched up cling film, polymer clay... Anything that is inert and washable/replaceable.

Not cling film. They'll eat it. Boo tries to every time I have some out.

Okay, my post just disappeared! Grrrrrrr
My thinking was that you need something that will fit inside the existing cup, but sit on the rim, rather than fall in - like a set of kitchen measuring cups can be like.
Or my other thought was sand in the bottom with either a firm plastic or wooden shape cut out to fit over the sand to keep the sand and pellets clean. They are the best I can come up with off the top of my head.

Thanks, Hezz - sand - good thinking! I'll need to find a suitable kind of plastic that I can cut to right shape which will sit on top, but I think this could work. Or twist the arm of friend with jigsaw. This can be a project when I am at a loose end (ha ha)!

Okay, here is the prototype: I found some quite rigid plastic which I could cut quite easily. It will be interesting to see if the buds get curious about what is underneath and end up just pulling the plastic layer up.

Could you perhaps fashion an upside-down cup so the edges would be tucked down?

All these feeder cups that come with the cages are way to deep. I see your problem.
I've got ring type holders that attach to the cage with removable shallow bowls that sit in the rings. That way I only give mine the seed needed for the day. Only a few teaspoons. I can't be bothered with blowing off husks.

Let us know how they handle their new "thing".
