I have had my mara cage since only August last year I paid £50 for it, last night, pickle jumped onto his perch which is a branch attached with a double washer and a wing nut and the perch fell off, he was a bit stressed and when I inspected I found the gage bar underneath has snapped, I have managed to cover it over with the end of the perch so he cant get to it but I am going to have to replace the cage, I really like it but I dont know if it has not lasted long enough or if its just a freaky thing, I have contacted the store where I bought it but havent heard anything yet, I really dont know if to replace it with the same or look for something else. I am limited for space and this one fits brilliantly, oh dear!!!

I've had this with one of the bars on my vision cage. I think some of the wood perches and a couple of bouncing budgies was a bit too much. I have covered it so they can't get to it.

Not that a bar shouldn't hold the weight of a wee budgie or two, but these ones that are only half a perch, for want of a better description, have to put the bars under a heap more pressure than a perch that goes all the way across and therefore carries only half the load. Plus these half-perches means the bar is carrying the whole weight of the perch itself with the end hanging out into the middle of no-where. I am not an engineer, but to me this has to mean that the bar is bearing well more than just a double load, plus the added weight and stress of a budgie hopping onto it. And when you think about it, the longer the half-perch, the greater the load.
Sorry, Helen, this doesn't help you, I realize, but rather I can see this as yet another design fault in the cages available.

Hezz I agree completely but as yet I havent managed to find natural perches that go all the way across the cage, if anyone knows where I might get some? I have spoken to Petsuperstore and the manager is going to call me back, they are talking about letting me buy a replacement at a reduced cost which sounds fine to me as the cage is ideal and I dont really want to start and find a different cage, it does of course depend on what they say

I have had that happen with my new piano 6 cage AND with the wire in the aviary , I don't think its a cage fault but those branch perches are too heavy and the strain of the bird jumping on them makes them bounce so after a while the wire bar snaps under the strain. I used cable ties on the wire down the shed to patch where the it was broken and in the piano 6 I put the colored rope bendy perch that you screw side to side next to the broken bar and its worked fine by hiding it .

How about this place? A number of our members swear by them and they make things to spec. Give them the size of your cage and the lengths you are looking for; I am sure you will find they are able to make something to fit. www.naturalbirdco.co.uk/If it is of any use, I find a likely looking branch, cut to approximate length and take home, wash, dry, recheck length and cut if necessary and then whittle the ends down to fit into the bars. If the majority of your bars are horizontal, this is a little harder as you need to get the fit just right or they will move around too much. Mine are mostly vertical and I slot the perches in to rest on the horizontal cross-bars. I have never bought a perch - I consider myself rather lucky, but it doesn't help you! Sorry.
