In the ongoing saga of Daley's identity crisis, I was wondering if the guinea pigs' food is likely to be harmful to him? He's started to have a little nibble when they're eating (he copies them :s). If it's not good I will take it out when he's flying and just give them hay. This is what's in it:
Composition: Sunflower Ext., Wheatfeed, Grass, Oatfeed, Maize, Apple (4%), Grape (4%), Carob Meal, Vegetable Oil, Minerals, Yeast (0.1%). Additives (Per Kg): Nutritional Additives: Vitamin A 23,500 iu, Vitamin D3 3,000 iu, Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate) 95 iu, Vitamin C (ascorbyl monophosphate) 300 mg, Iron Sulphate Monohydrate 30 mg, Calcium Iodate Anhydrous 2.5 mg, Cupric Sulphate Pentahydrate 25 mg, Manganous Oxide 48 mg, Zinc Oxide 34 mg, Zinc Chelate 166 mg. Antioxidant. Analytical Constituents: Protein 17%, Fat Content 4.5%, Crude Fibre 17%, Crude Ash 7%, Calcium 0.8%, Phosphorous 0.6%.

I have no idea, but my 2 hahns macaws found the bag of burgess rabbit pellets open the other day and scoffed a few each and have not fell off their perches since doing so I'm a bit concerned that the additives would be at levels unsuitable for birds to have long term so won't allow access to the pellets again, but if they really want the odd one once in a while they can have one.

Yeah that's what I thought. Looking at the other ingredients I think that's all ok for a bird (it's mainly grass) but I wondered about the level of vits. But I suppose it's designed for a guinea pig that weighs about 1kg to eat a handful a day and Daley might eat 5 or 6 pieces in a day of visits to the pig cage which probably equates to only a few grams of food. But I don't know what the RDAs of different vits are for budgies so I can't work out if it's too much.

If Daley starts doing push ups and laps around the guinea pig cage he's probably had too many vits.

There is no harm playing it safe. I would be following the "if in doubt" rule, just in case.

i highly doubt it, it should be fine. Can't see they're being any issues.
