My six/seven-year-old budgie (we are unsure of his actual age), Peter, has unfortuately been quite through the wars lately. At the end of May, he suffered a respiratory infection which cleared, however left him very thin as he went off his food. He was quite a podgy budgie before (we were told by the vet that he has very small fatty tumours on his lower stomach, but apart from that is very healthy), but since this respiratory infection, his breastbone has become very prominent, and he just looks very very thin.
However, just yesterday we had to have another emergency trip to our Avian vets when we saw that he was limping around on the bottom of his cage and was holding his left foot very clenched, but hanging limply. The vet said that he didn't think it was a liver or kidney problem which was the main concern as he was otherwise very healthy and his droppings didn't indicate these conditions, plus yesterday we heard a great commotion, looked across at the budgie cage to see his hanging upside down from his swing - goodness knows what he had been doing, but we think this is how he hurt it. Thankfully today, after a little bit of budgie physio on his foot, opening it very gently and a 0.02ml dosage of Metacam, he is starting to use his foot again.
Whilst he is somewhat 'incapacitated', I wondered if this would be a good opportunity for some weight gain for him as the vet was slightly concerned about his weight loss after his infection. He gave us some Critical Care formula, to be administered in addition to his current 'Trill', the odd Millet spray and 'Harrison's High Potency Super Fine' diet. He also gave us some Avipro Plus to put in his water too.
I was just wondering whether anyone could suggest some good weight gain foods please, as I did read somewhere that Millet isn't very high calorie, and so isn't very useful for weight gain?
