I was sorting out all my birdy bits the other day trying to tidy things up a bit and remembered something Barrie said a while back about having a budgie first aid kit. I must admit, I do sort of have one, but it is not that organised. SO! I thought time to organise that. I may not have EVERTHING but I just wanted to share with everyone what I have in mine just in case for emergencies. It is clearly labelled and in the same place so am able to access it quickly if necessary. We have: Guardian Angel (when a bird is sick and has to be hospitalised) Daily Essentials 1 (I only used this when my birds were not eating their veg) Cornflour (for stopping blood such as blood feathers etc) Ivermectin 0.1% (for mite prevention and air sac mites) Lugol's Iodine Solution (also for air sac mites or wheezy squeaky coughs) Nail Kit (containing tweesers, small scissors etc) Large Scissors Pipet or dropper (for measuring) Measuring pots/cups in mls spare drinkers spare feeder I was also given a tip not to use cotton buds on budgie feathers as the cotton can get caught up in feathers and must not be ingested by the bird. If you need to clean away anything of the feather for any reason a plain clean toothbrush is suitable. I know some of you have first aid kits too, what do you keep in yours? Any other ideas you have will be most appreciated!

It's a good idea. I've got first aid "things", but they're not all together in one place in a kit. I should put one together too.

I too have first aid bits & bobs but not all in one place. I did notice recently that my guardian angel was out of date though, so ordered a new pot.

Great thread - useful reminder and straight-forward photo. Thank you. It will be interesting to read what others would add to the kit. I like the tooth brush idea.
So.. - would there be more than one size - single pet, small flock, larger aviary?
- could the container incorporate a bathing dish as well as place to secure the scissors / clippers?
- should it have a list of contents and tips for non-flap first aid?
- what about disposable gloves?
- what colour/s would it be made in?
- how much would a full kit cost to produce and then retail at? (profit margin???)
An interesting idea? I would buy one if they weren't too expensive. They would make a good addition to the "essential" list when buying a first bird from a pets shop or breeder. Great Christmas presents... we've just enough time to get going!! I bet several online companies would be interested in promoting and selling them. What about a name for the kit? "The Big FA Kit"? "Budgie 1st Aid Box"? "Who's a Pretty Boy Health Kit"? Come on... let's try to come up with some costings and include cost of p&p. Profits from the first 500 sales to go to the forum?

That is a valid point sweetpea that I must remember too, this stuff has a sell by date and is worth checking regularly. Great idea Learner! They would be a bit costly tho for some buying all in one go. I myself have had to purchase items it bit by bit. Gloves of some sort would be an idea, especially if you are handling your bird(s) with that ivermectin stuff - you should not get that on you otherwise you administer yourself as it soaks in the skin!

I really don't think a drop of ivermectin is going to cause a problem, Sam. At the worst, it will de-louse you, at best nothing - you would need more than a drop.
