She knew she would have to wait for next breeding season, if she missed this one

She's a tough one, that's for sure! Meanwhile I've thrown out one lot of quail eggs as they were not hatching. Hopefully mum can relax and get her strength back before laying the next lot. I'll give them a whole boiled egg tomorrow, from our own chooks. The other baby quails appear to be thriving in spite of the changeable weather. They are playful and fit snugly under their parents when they get cold. They are so cute! I have not counted but there are a lot of budgie eggs. We will be one big family soon!!!

Lovely photos, Marleen. She really was a lucky hen - lucky not to have lost an eye. You and she have done well - there doesn't seem to be any redness left there at all. She is looking really good.

I checked some of the nest boxes, and one hen has 7 eggs! My very best hen (no longer with us) had more than once 9 hatchlings at a time, and seemed to cope. A remarkable feat!

When the wound was still swollen and bloodied, I noticed her mate cleaning it up for her with his beak. He did a great job, and another behaviour I have learnt about. They keep surprising!
