Maybe nothing but on occasions when I have been close to the cage and chatting with Joey I have noticed his tail bobbing up and down. He doesn't always do it. So I just wondered if it was something I should be worried about. Thank You.

Tail bobbing can be an indication of illness, but if it is only occasionally and he is chittering away when it is happening, or on one leg, I wouldn't be too concerned. And some birds always have a bit of a bob going on. If you are concerned at all, why not try getting a video of him while it is happening, and when it isn't, and find out whether anyone else thinks it is cause for concern. Pop.

I will try and get a short video. It will be smart phone video though. I've no idea when it will be.

Was going to ask if he does it whilst chatting - I usually can see which of mine is being the noisiest by their tails bobbing! Fingers crossed its not cause for concern

This is one of the symptoms, along with eating and sleeping more and being quiet generally, which made me take Luee to the vet this last time. It was a very distinct tail bob in time with his breathing, but I have seen him with a 'ticky' tail at other times - it looks like a shaky second hand of a clock but not very distinct in time with breathing. The first time he was treated for these symptoms after the course of baytril the vet said he was a bit 'clicky' but didn't think it was much of a cause for concern. It certainly seems important to get to know what is a non-ill baseline for a bird in these terms so that you can spot anything more concerning.

Thank you both/ His eating and sleeping doesn't seem to have changed. He has always been a quiet one and sleepy since I got him, so there is no change there I have watched for any chest movement or apparent breathing rhythm and cannot see one. It seems to start when I approach him and start chatting. His wing will quiver very slightly for a short time, and then his tail will have a definite bob to it. It will stop when I walk away. Could it be some sort of anxiety?

My 1st budgie bobby's tail *always* bobbed (though he wasn't called Bobby for that reason ), apparently it was poor posture.

That sounds like it may be just that. It is very rare that he stands proud on the perch. According to the various readings. The only time he does stand up is either he gets startled or I walk in the room after a slight absence. So yes he does have a poor posture. Thank you. I can tell him as often as I like be I bet he won't take a bit of notice.

That's interesting - I think Charlie has poor posture too - his tail is kind of bent down rather than going straight down from his back like Woody's. I had noticed it but hadn't thought of it that way.

That's how Joey sits many a time. We seem yo have a few that do not sit up properly.

Bobby was my 1st budgie so I thought it was normal for a budgies tail to always bob, it wasn't until my Aunt saw him that I realised it wasn't. We do seem to have some slouchy birds! But Old Pecker the fact Joey is relaxed enough to be slouchy shows how much he trusts you, if he didn't he'd be on the alert & sitting up straight ready to flee.

I'm sure you are right there Starrymist because when he is alert then he does stand up properly on the perch. I asked the question because a couple of times the bobbing of the tail was quite pronounced.

From the extra info you have given, Pop, I would put this into the "nothing to worry about" basket. Joey is an individual.

Thank you Hezz, in the basket it goes. It does seem as though he is one of a rare breed.
