I'm sure @birdgurl has one of her little buds on pellets for similar reasons. Hopefully the meds will help.

Hi Guys, Thanks for your messages. Took him to the vets today, the vet had a good look at him and I told him everything that had happened in the last week.He could find nothing physically wrong with him apart from a fatty chest which is the liver problem again. I have limited his seeds to a spoonfull a day, he has veggies like spinach and broccolli, eggs and the fatty liver has reared its head again. The vet gave us an anti inflam,an antibiotic and a liver supplement. He also said to switch his diet to a pellet based one and said nutri berries were good. He said no seed only as a treat lots of veggies and fruit and some yogurt. Does anyone feed thier buds pellets?? I have read they are full of corn syrup. I dont know if i should just feed him seeds in the morning and then veggies/fruits for the rest of the day. He is fine after his meds. Was quite funny, the vet was showing us how to give them to him with a syringe and columbo shook his head and coughed them out! Poor vet. So he will be on them for 7 days. will keep you posted. XX This I am surprised at - yoghurt? I was under the impression that all dairy foods were on the "no" list. Did the vet explain the reason for feeding him yoghurt? I really would love to know ...... it may well help another budgie out there one day. I would stick to what the vet has advised. I am no fan of pellets, but if they help get your little guy out of the woods and help keep his liver healthy, that has to be a good thing, surely. If you have access to any grass seed heads that have no pesticides or not close to a road, these are great food for them too, but I seem to remember you are in London ..... I imagine they would be a little hard to find. You can always sprout your own seeds from his budgie mix - sprouts are excellent for them too. I hope all works out well for you. Do you have to go back in the near future to have him reviewed?

Upon reading this I always thought the same as well about dairy for buds? So I'd be keen to know as to why the vet prescribed yoghurt too.
Speedy get well wishes for Columbo x

The Vet said just a small amount like a small lick now and then. Only natural yog. He did say not often. He said in the wild they are opportunistic with diet even eating meat!!!! He is a bit out of sorts today but i think he will be okay once the meds kick in.
I did read about giving aloe vera juice as supplement as its good for the liver problem. So that may be worth a go.
If he doesn't improve after a week of meds he will need to go back to the vet for some tests. Dont like the sound of the blood work. They put them under and take 1% of blood. Hope that can be avoided.
I am going to get the pellets as the vet said they would be the best bet over seed. xx

Maybe yoghurt kills bad bacteria? Does in adults esp woman... Maybe it hels calm down innards. My dad used to drink milk for ulcers.

Aloe, milk thistle, dandelion ..... all these are good liver cleansers. Milk thistle and dandelion can be given as the original plant if you are able, aloe tastes pretty terrible and prob better added to something ...... I used to add it to eggfood. Someone on here gave us the name of a particular liver detox/cleanser supplement that is made for pets ....... was it birdguhl? Their vet had recommended it for their birds, whoever it was. I didn't make a note of it at the time! Silly me! I am wondering if your vet recommended the yoghurt as a probiotic for Columbo? Are you able to ask? Usually probiotics are given after antibiotics to restore natural gut flora ..... this may be a new approach that we haven't heard of before. Remember that antibiotics can make you feel worse before you feel better, so this may be his problem at the moment. As for budgies eating meat - yes they can and will eat their own, and I know some breeders in Aust give their aviaries whole chicken carcasses to pick at ........

So far so good. He has stopped shaking his tail every two mins and is singing as loud as ever. Thanks Hezz for the info on liver cleansing leaves. Thanks birdgurl for the link. I received 2 packs of nutri berry pellets today. How do you feed your budge them? How many a day? I put one in a clip and he had a nibble but only because he is so nosey! Did you leave a little seed and ween? Also do you continue to give your bud milk thistle?? The vet did say wait until he has finished his meds before changing his diet. sorry so many questions xx

Great to hear Columbo is doing so much better. I would talk to your vet regarding the milk thistle and dandelion etc. Some people believe liver cleansers shouldn't be given all the time as the liver starts to rely on the additives and forgets how to do its work; others say you need to get the liver back to full health and then wean them off the cleansers ....... you could end up with conflicting advice from any number of people who don't know your bird. Your vet does, and knows Columbo's history too. Keep us posted on how he is doing, please.

Nutri berries look interesting - how did you find out about them? They sound big if Columbo is able to nibble on one at a time.
I was given Hepatosyl Plus for my budgie with liver disease. He got this for weeks and weeks but the vet said to get them all on Harrisons as soon as possible (for all I know the others have liver disease too).
I use Harrison's Superfine pellets. I started by mixing them with everything the buds were eating. I feed germinated seeds only (no dry seed) so they are wet and I ground up the pellets so basically they couldn't avoid getting the taste of them. Gradually I stopped grinding them so finely and dried the germinated seeds so the pellets were more like the dry ones they would eventually eat as their main diet.
Within about 4 weeks all the buds were eating dry pellets on their own. Now they have pellets available all the time and I give them each about 1/2 teaspoon of germinated seeds per day (but I should be reducing this gradually) in 2 or 3 meals. They still get a little bit of millet 1-2 times per week and lots of vegs. Recently they have been getting some seeding grass which they really go for.
They do get really excited when the germinated seeds are produced - bless them - hence my difficulty reducing this even further.
My budgie with Beak and Feather Disease is doing well - his feather colour has returned to a much deeper violet (he was very pale and patchy for a while)- I think this is probably due to the Harrisons.
Another of mine was on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. During this time he refused to eat Harrisons but has returned to doing so since stopping, thank goodness.
Hope this helps. Good luck with little Columbo - it is awful when they're ill and you're worried.

Thank You birdguhl,
I will use your method with the nutri berries. The vet recommended them, he also mentioned harrisons. (I got them from a site called northern parrots) I am going to sprout some seeds too.
Thanks again for all your help xxxx

Good luck - if you're determined it can happen. I feel for my buds not having the natural experience of eating seeds but am happy that they are getting good nutrition and I think they are all in good condition. This evening I have ordered some nutri berries from Northern Parrots along with a couple of bags of Harrisons, so I will be really interested to see how they go with some of them every now and again for a bit of variety.
