Its been a tough day today. I noticed this morning that little Fern had a poopy bottom and was kicking back to try and clean herself, all the others were outside except her so i took the opportunity to quickly catch her and bring her in for a closer look. I was not prepared for what i found and couldn't believe i had not noticed it before, a dreaded tumor . I made an appointment with the vet for this afternoon and decided to take Teddy along for them to take a look at his fat tummy while i was at it. Ive just got back and the outcome is that they both have tumors and he said that it was just palliative care now, which i sort of knew from past experience anyway. He thinks Teddy's is a fatty tumor but ferns looks more aggressive. They are both eating drinking and you wouldn't think there was anything wrong, evil evil things these but i know they can go for some time quite comfortably and i will know when the time is right so that they don't suffer. Not a good day .

Oh I'm so sorry what bad news you have had. You will do what's best by them and enjoy them as much as possible.

Thankyou all, im still trying to get my head round it and sort out the best way forward. Two different tumors with different treatments are going to take some working out. Fern is worse than Teddy and is on Baytril as her poos are a bit watery and at least for the time being i will have to keep giving her little bum a wash, she is soooo good about this and almost knows im trying to help her, i have kept her in to closely watch her. She is worrying at her bum with her feet a lot, this i must try to address with a little vaseline maybe, still looking into that because i don't want her to make herself sore. I decided to put Teddy back into the aviary for now as his tumor can be controlled by diet and he is also very chipper and seems to be stressing Fern a little, i know they can live for some years with this type of tumor, im still thinking about this one. Its been a long day and my mind is working overtime but im sure i will see things a little more clearly tomorrow. Im so glad i have this lovely place to come and sound things out and be among other buds lovers that don't say, its just a bird, you can get another .

Oh I am sorry to hear this I have two hens with tumours, both on their butts but both very different from each other. Bella in the aviary has a very bizarre tumour which means her tail feathers can't grow so she basically can't fly. She gets around fine though and is happy enough with her toyboy haha! In the house there is Milly and its affected her flying too but that's because she is a small bird and is now basically butt heavy so she can't gain height. I took her to the vets about two years ago and he told me it was a tumour, she is still going strong though but occasionally I have to clean her vent if poop gets stuck. Sorry for my ramblings but my point is that a tumour, whilst a bad thing, doesn't have to mean the end for a budgie. They can still live a happy, long, life x

I know they can be very unpredictable and its a lottery with which way it can go. Just trying to make fern a little more comfy and get her Baytril into her to address her possible infection and see where we go from there. She was calling to the others at tea time and they are calling to her so ive got her as far away as possible in the lounge, i don't want her stressed because she isnt with the others but i don't want to put another with her whilst she has the infection, its gonna be a tough few days, but hey we are having some good chats and she calls for me when i leave the room . I still cant believe how quickly this has grown and i haven't seen it before now .

Oh Skysmum, my heart goes out to you, Fern & Teddy, brave little buds. After Tink's (rip) diagnosis I know just how hard it is, I dont know if this is an option your vet and yourself would consider but Tink had a long lasting antibiotic injection called Convenia, it saved the stress of having to administer meds every day, I believe it was meant to last a month, maybe worth a chat with the vet about it..I also gave acv & weak black tea, as I learnt of the medicinal properties. Sending you bigs hugs and if I had a magic wand id be waving it frantically for you and your beautiful buds, if you need a chat feel free to inbox me xxx

The vet didn't mention the long lasting antibiotic, thankfully she is being very good about having the baytril but i will keep that in mind for future reference, thankyou. I lost their sister to a tumor 5 years ago, she was just 3. This leads me to believe the theory that these horrible things are possibly genetic, apart from Inca my buds are what i bred myself although their parents did not suffer with them and the mum lived until she was 12, Jo Jo obviously has her genes.

Oh, Skysmum! A double whammy indeed. How intuitive of you to decide to take Teddy as well. You know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your beautiful budgies - I wouldn't wish tumours on my worst enemy's budgies, and the inability to be proactive is one of the hardest things to take, as you well know. Hopefully Teddy and Fern will be like Rachael's two and not be overrun by their growths. That is the best we can hope for. Big hugs and lots of empathy going your way. xxx
