Yesterday, my brother and dad were at the nets doing cricket training when they found a little cockatiel on the ground. He has no obvious injuries and seems lively enough but he can't fly. Dad knew I have always wanted a cockatiel so we went down and rescued him. We don't know how long he has been out because as soon as I put water and seed in his cage he guzzled the water and ate for 50 minutes straight. He looks fairly young and I assume he has a home somewhere which we are endeavoring to find. He's a beautiful pale yellow colour with light grey/white wings. I have named him Rocco and he's gorgeous! One slight problem is that, although I know the very basics, I'm not sure about looking after cockatiels. We have bought him a swing, new perches and some trill cockatiel seed along with a seed stick, but what else is necessary? I tried giving him carrot but he wouldn't go near it.
Also, another problem is the fact that he can't fly. He was found at Rawlings Park on a soccer field but we don't know how he got there if he can't fly. Any suggestions as to what may have happened? My mum said if we can't find his home then we can't keep him and we will give him to the botanical gardens where they have an aviary of cockatiels. My reason as to why he can't go there was because he can't fly at all. But wont't that prove difficult to find him a rehome if necessary?
Sorry for my the long post,
Nicola
P.S. I know there are only a few people from Australia on here but it's worth a try. If you have lost a cockatiel, please PM me
