We've just opened some fresh millet sprays & one of them has a black tinge all along one side, the other side is normal looking & also underneath the black tinged bits, is it ok to give Brodie this or could it be something nasty? I've attached a pic but not sure how clearly you can see it.

If it was me I would bin it all. For the price of it. I would say it was a form of black mould. That's just my opinion of course.

I would be like OP too... if in doubt, bin it. I am very wary of this kind of thing.

Yes, we're going to bin it, it doesn't look very nice. It was a branded bag from Pets at Home, normally we buy it loose from the local independent pet shop (or sometimes at The Range), I think we'll stick with them! Thanks for reassuring me that this is the right course of action!

I always get mine from a pet shop in the local market. They bag it themselves, so it is in their own interest to make sure it is in good order. Seeing as you got yours from Pets at Home I might be inclined to take it back if that is possible. If you got it online then it wouldn't be worth it.

actually I bought some in PAH and the rest have been in the packet for a while. Look ok, but obviously packet is now open. I wonder how long they keep before air exposure gets to them?
I havent given B any in ages, and he probably could do with a treat

If it was clean and dry when packed and then kept in a dry environment it should be OK I think. I have kept mine in the conservatory where it is warm all the time, in a polythene bag that is tied and it has been fine. I have had it about a fortnight now. It does depend so much on how it was when it was packaged. I would wait to see what the more experienced have to say before doing anything though. I would also say 'if in doubt, throw it out'. I only pay £1 for mine and there is plenty for one budgie.

Alot of millet spray is like this now. They are fungal spores I think, from being packed and shipped while not properly dried. To be on the safe side with all millet I would recommend soaking overnight in a vanodine or F10 solution. Rinsing well, and then drying thoroughly before feeding.

If one lives in a place where sunshine is a rare commodity what is the best way to dry the millet, please?

You should be able to do it in the oven, at low temp, but it would be a guess for how long.

Thank you. That's what I thought might be the way. I suppose it would be just keep an eye on it, turning every so often. Time it as well so I would know for future reference.

I spread it on top of the boiler when its switched on or if I have loads of it hang it on a washing line in the boiler cupboard
