Five a day can seem like an impossible task for not only us but also our budgerigars.
The answer is juicing.
Vegetables taken in juice form often provide more nutritional value than when eaten raw or cooked.
Solid foods have to go through the body's digestive tract and this can take several hours and requires a healthy digestive system. Juice, on the other hand, is assimilated and absorbed very quickly into the blood stream without taxing the digestive system.
By juicing fruits and vegetables you lose only the fibre, but this means that a much higher quantity of nutrients is available in the juices.
The first step is to find the veggies that provide us and our birds with the vitamins and minerals our body needs.
Juices supplied in the mornings are a great way to wake up the digestive tract providing hydration and nourishment.
Let us begin with these vegetables; Carrot, Beetroot, Celery, Cabbage, Cucumber and Potato
Carrot contains; Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium and Vitamins A, B, C, E and K.
Carrots exerts a balancing action on the body and not only is it good for constipation it stops attacks of diarrhoea and vomiting. The rich vitamin A content benefits the eyes. Vitamin A or Carotene stimulates protein synthesis and accelerates growth, ideal for budgie chicks falling behind in their physical development.
Benefits for us all are they help against Asthma, Cancer, Liver problems, Arthritis, Bladder problems, Ulcers, Skin Problems, Hay Fever and Acne
If you use organic carrots then do add some of the green carrot tops into your juice.
Beetroot contains iron and a number of trace elements that encourage the absorption of iron into the blood. Anything that improves our bird’s blood and the formation of the red blood cells is welcome into our bird’s diet.
The benefits of Beet are and it is well documented as a benefit to aiding high blood pressure and other heart problems.
Beet juice is a wonderful organic cleaner for liver, kidney and gall bladder and also stimulates activity of the lymph in the body. The juice improves memory (good for me then) clears blood vessels and strengthens the nervous system.
Remember just like carrots the beet tops can be added into our beet juice.
We will not be serving these juices individually as beet juice is better mixed with carrot juice.
Celery juice raises the general tone of an organism, improves appetite and has diuretic and laxative effects. We use it to increase fertility in our breeding pairs. It is good for birds suffering fatigue. The juice contains vitamin C and vitamins of group B. It is also rich with organic combinations of sodium. It contains a big amount of organic potassium, calcium and phosphorus.
Cabbage juice is one of the better vegetable juices that have a number of health benefits that have been documented over many years. It possesses an anti-ulcer effect and can be used for the treatment of the stomach. It helps avoid the problem of podgy budgies as it slows down the transformation of the carbohydrates into fats. Green Cabbage contains a number of minerals and vitamins including potassium, sulphur, chlorine, iodine, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin U. Tomato juice improves the stomach condition. Its antitoxic elements protect the liver and help stimulate its activity. Fresh juice acts as a natural energiser as it boosts sugar formation in the blood. It contains Vitamin A & C, iron and calcium.
Potato juice is a natural remedy which will improve the functions of our digestive system. Potato was called “the apples of the great earth “in Europe, it is a food very rich in nutrition especially in Calcium and vitamin C. It is a very powerful liver cleaner, relieves arthritic pains, skin blemishes and dry skin. Potato has the effect of suppressing cancer growth it can also cure heart diseases, diabetes and kidney disease.
Cucumber juice is, but it also possesses some other good qualities: it improves feather growth, strengthens the walls of blood vessels and stabilizes the work of the heart. Drinking a mix of cucumber and carrot juice yields good results at the presence of rheumatic diseases. A high potassium level makes cucumber juice very useful in normalizing blood pressure. The combination of elements in cucumber juice plays a big role in the maintenance of healthy beaks, claws and ceres. It has a positive effect on the nervous system and improves memory.
How do we store it and how do we serve it?
I think the vegetable juices could be stored in ice cube makers but then how do we serve it, your ideas are welcome.
