Ernie has been molting and looks a bit rough around the edges. He has been rubbing his head on the perch abd the cuttlefish and just made his head bleed. What should I do other than freak out?

Poor Ernie! Does it look like it has stopped bleeding? If so, don't panic. I'm sure he will be fine - if maybe a little sore. If it is not stopping bleeding, I would be trying to get a hold of him and getting some cornfour or vaseline on it. I just know this from having a broken blood feather with Luee (one of the chasing down and medicating times).

Don't freak out. As birdghul says, cornflour if still bleeding. I came home to Custard covered in blood all over his head several months ago. Same thing, broken blood feather. Apart for looking a right sorry sight and being covered in blood, he was acting his usual self. I freaked out though, even though the bleeding stopped, and took to the vet and they said he was probably scratching his head and it broke, but he was fine. They also advised the cornflour / Vaseline thing for future. Poor Ernie

It has stopped bleeding and he is chuntering away to himself as normal. It's so freaky and scary. Does my nerves in.

It will look worse that it is especially as his feathers are white But your right, it's hard not to freak. Especially as they are so small and precious.

I've just cleaned their cage and they have a nice fresh bath. Some seed with added egg food and some peas and sweetcorn. A little pamper to make him feel better, and Bert is along for the ride.

Ah, poor Ernie. I'm sure a little pamper will make all the difference.

Even though you may feel the need, I don't think there is anything to be gained from trying to wash the blood off, in fact you may just make it bleed again, and it may be sore. Misty did the very same thing recently.

Poor Ernie It seems some of the buds have been through the wars today! It's frightening to see but as lemonade has said, it will look worse with his white feathers.

Well Ernie is his usual self today but still has the dried blood there...his little war wound. My brave little soldier. Signed: Bert & Ernie...and their human friend Nina.

Glad Ernie isn't feeling any worse for wear.
