Hi all,
Ive just got in from work to a house filled with smoke. My husband had a migrane and had taken strong painkillers which made him fall asleep while he had dinner in the oven. The smoke was so bad my eyes are bright red and running. I've opened all windows and put the birds in the hall where it isnt so bad, with the doors closed but I am worried that the smoke will affect their health. Does anyone know? Would it be extreme if I took them out the flat and sat in my car so they are away completely from the smoke? They seem fine right now

Weather permitting they can sit outside in a sheltered spot for a bit.

Oh my goodness...how frightening for you. Anywhere away from the smoke till it clears would be best.

They're currently in the bathroom / hall, its not really bad there, just smells a bit smoky. I'm not letting them back into the living room as my kitchen opens out into living room. This place stinks and eyes are nipping so bad. The budgies seem ok, Apple chatting up Sprite, Paddy trying to split it up and Lemon and Custard are eating. So they all seem unaffected by their exposure to the smoky haze. Thank goodness. OH has now went in a mood with me for shouting at him

It may have shook him up a bit...it could have ended up a lot worse if you hadn't come home.

I hate to think ... I sometimes stay away for work and it worries me that he's so careless at times

I hate to think ... I sometimes stay away for work and it worries me that he's so careless at times Men's brains work very differently to women's Perhaps you should write him a list and stick it on the fridge or somewhere he will notice (try the tele perhaps?) Buy him an alarm clock and preset it for different times, like every 15 minutes (bit harsh that??) or ring him up regularly, I mean we multitask don't we.....but men.....one thing at a time!

Do you have a smoke alarm? If not I'd seriously think of getting one!

Definitely get the smoke alarms checked ...... are they hard-wired, or ones you put up yourself??

Thank goodness the birds are okay. Heavy painkillers can cause drowsiness, and what was he doing cooking dinner when he had a migraine at any case? Ggrrr, I suppose he meant well trying to cook dinner for you, but toast with baked beans would have been quick to fix! Never cook when drunk, ill or sedated!!!!! I hope he will be more cautious in future, but perhaps tell him when able to have a bit of a giggle in a few days.....

The place still stinks of a stale smoke smell They're hard wired and get checked yearly off the fire brigade, because we are in a listed historic building conversion. He also knows too well about cooking whilst drunk, took he top of his finger off last New Year's Day trying to make an arrabiata sauce. Normal tipsy folk make toast, he makes pasta and sauce with a bit of finger .....
