I have recently rescued a supposedly female pearl cockatiel, 'she's ' around four years old very affectionate and very tame. Sits in my lap for cuddles and scratches. However thereare two issues with 'her'.
One: I don't think it's a female, as pearl tiels are easier to sex this bird displays actions and habits of a male. Displaying by spreading wings in a show off fashion, bright yellow face and has no pearl markings as males lose them after first molt.
Two: the bird was in and still is in bad condition. Eyes are bright enough and is capable of preening, however it is feather plucking rather regularly. The bird has bald flanks and under the wing pits, legs and back. I will be treating the bird for mites and other illnesses but I believe it maybe psychological as its cage was lunged at by a dog, also usedto have a cage buddy but passed away.
Eating well and fussed regularly, also has a very greasy feeling on feathers which I can feel on my skin after fussing him/her. Can't post a pic just yet as on my phone. Advice with feather plucking much needed.

Changed profile pic to show the tiel. You can't see her bare skin from this pic but it looks sore with open feather follicle holes

Pearl cocks usually moult their wing spots out and become like normal males after a few moults unless they are pied pearls. Then they can retain some of the spots.
