Hey. My Sunshine is having liver problems, nothing major the vets says but it is the cause of his growing beak and nails. He suggested trying Milk Thistle and Lactulose at home and a diet change (which Im trying like a mad man but it is hard but they do seem to have taken to the Apple Cider Vinegar (with Mother) as well as some Alfalfa sprouts). The alcohol free Milk Thistle liquid is on order and I can get Lactulose from the chemist tomorrow but my question is: what is the dosing? I know the Milk Thistle is 1-2 drops in the water daily (I think, please correct me if Im wrong) but have no idea about the Lactulose. Do I put it in water or food? how much? how often? Would love to hear from people who have used these things for liver probs and their experience

Btw, welcome to the forums, just realized your new here ...
Liquid form you have to watch out, does normally the vet would give you. Too much and your bird might get diarrhea.

Sorry, can't help with the question here, but one of my buds was on hepatosyl plus from the vet for liver disease. I'm pretty sure it has milk thistle in it but otherwise I'm none the wiser.
What is your vet recommending for their diet? Mine are all on Harrisons Superfine pellets.

For future use you can buy milk thistle seeds on ebay, which you can grow and feed to your buds as part of their daily veg. I grow lots of edible weeds for my birds and tortoises. I get mine from shelled warriors shop on ebay.

Thanks for the welcome. I see ok, my vets was shut today so will ask them tomorrow.
My vet said more fruit, veg and try pellets. I did ask Harrisons for a free sample but no luck. My birds are ultra fussy so would prefer to try them out before I bought any. My birds do like broccoli but only occasionally. Im sneakily trying different ways to get them to try new things so fingers crossed. I will look into the hepatosyl plus but have only found it for cats, dogs and horses so far lol Thanks again.

I was looking into milk thistle seeds to grow my own but read it takes a year for them to grow, maybe I read it wrong :/ I am currently sprouting alfalfa for them and do give them dandelion leaves when I can.

Re pellets - it is very likely that it will take quite a while to get your budgies to try pellets so if you go for this prepare for a long haul! I have seen hepatosyl plus for other animals too. I think it is the same but best ask your vet. starlingqueen, I would love if you started a thread on edible weed growing!

If you are after in-season "greens" and live in the UK try to find someone with a veg plot or an allotment. I have a lovely carpet of chickweed growing and my lot it. They belt out into the flight every morning looking for their breakfast treat... and it's free. Grows like weeds Milk thistle is not so common but you can sometimes spot it in flower borders at this time of year.

There are hundreds of weeds that can be fed to our buds and all readily available if you know what to look for. We need a section on wed identification so people can post pictures of what they can find. They can then be identified as good or bad weeds. I would be careful about feeding too much dandelion as it contains oxalic acid which binds to calcium and prevents it's absorption. So moderation is always the best way to feed it.

This is a website set up by a member of the old forum. It is brilliant and should be bookmarked or printed out by all. It's great for identifying plants, particularly for those of you in Europe or the UK. www.adnort.webs.com/My_html_Cookery_BookE.html

Wish I had a big patch of dirt so I could grow all those weeds and grasses. I can sometimes source dandelion and poa grass, but that's about it.

I can give you a whole list of weeds and plants that they can eat if anyone is interested. I can also help with identifying them if photos are provided. There are far more things that can be eaten than most people realise. Pansies for instance, sedums, also known as ice plants, nasturtiums, strawberry leaves and fruits to name just a few and all commonly grown in gardens.
