Hello all. I wondered if anyone has had a bud resistant to antibiotics?
Thomas has not been well lately, resulting in a few vet visits/consultations. The main symptom is dodgy poops, where the white bit is looking yellow. Mr Vet detected bacteria & prescribed antibiotics, 3 different types, but none have made any difference.
Thomas's poops are currently being analysed at a lab.
Other than the poop problem, Thomas is generally more lethargic than usual. He has been moulting but only a little & the moult happened after the poop problem had already showed itself. He is eating & drinking as normal. His bottom area is red & inflamed, Mr Vet thought due to the poops being more watery than normal.
Add to this that Cagney is moulting & Phineas has not "jiggied" in two weeks, so things are far from normal here. There hasn't even been any fighting...

Cant say I have heard of a budgie being antibiotic resistant before but there are always possibilities I suppose? Have you thought the others behaviour is due to perhaps the weather change we have finally had? And I am sorry to hear that Thomas has been a bit poorly but at least the vet is onto it and lets hope he can sort your little bud out soon xx

Sorry to hear that you're having worries about your boys. Hope you get some clarity soon as it is awful when you know something's not right.

Yes, I am sure some of the miserable weather we have can affect their moods. The moult doesn't help either. At least Thomas is still eating & drinking.

How is dear Thomas now? Any news from Mr E Vet today? Thomas has been much the same for about 3 weeks now. Mr Vet said something about giving him a supplement. I am to ring tomorrow about medication. I am sure they are fed up of me ringing all the time....

Have you got the lab results back yet?
Are they doing fecal and crop smears?
If you know what the bacteria is, or are, they can better target the right antibiotic.

Update. I spoke to Mr Vet this morning. The final lab results came back last night. It appears that Thomas has "Pasteurella"?? Not sure of spelling there. He specifically told me *not* to google it as I may read alarming things. He said it is a bacteria that *can* be serious but in this case, is not. The bacteria occurs normally in the gut but in this case the levels are not balanced.
He said to get Thomas back onto the baytril (1st antibiotics he was on), plus a supplement that he is currently tracking down.
Of course I did google, & it appears to be linked to cat saliva.
I feel better for having the problem identified. Hopefully Thomas will feel better soon too.

Hi sweet pea, I feel like we're facing the same thing at the moment. Our bud Maggie, has appeared to have a respiratory infection, the first lot of antibiotics were by beak, and seemed to have a bit of an effect, then she went backwards, so second lot which is sprinkling over food, and some in their water, hasn't really made a difference at all. In fact yesterday and today, she's fluffed up and head in shoulders more than ever. I have to admit due to some rubbish delivery companies and a bit of scepticism on our part, we've been a bit slow to change quite a few bits the vet said to do, I.e their food to pellets, we've struggled to find the lamp that fits our uv bulb, but that's coming Monday. I just wondered if to insist vet does lab tests but if it's respiratory, can they do that? Or just if it's bacterial? My partner isn't feeling that much confidence as vets hasn't made much difference and with the last lot sprinkling over food, he wasn't convinced how much meds she's actually been getting .... But I can't watch her just sitting there seemingly getting more poorly ....

That is great news that Mr Vet discovered what it was, as now at least he knows how to treat it. Fingers crossed that Thomas will be back to his cheeky self in no time.
