It was 10 days ago that the vet told us Lemonade had what she thought was a tumour and at the most a couple of weeks to live. I haven't really been on the forum since as I have been too upset and also trying to do everything to help the little man.
So the vet said his condition was only going to decline, and that we would have to put him to sleep when it got too much.
After doing a lot of research on herbal medicines for birds and food changes that would benefit his diet and tumours, we have been feeding him a small plate, 3 times a day of a mix of mash sweet potato with grated raw broccoli and cauliflower, carrot, tomato, blueberries and rosemary, eucalyptus, and milk thistle seeds and spirulana sprinkled on the food, with Guardian Angel. He has also been switched to Harrison's pellets, which surprisingly he has been munching no problem. He has been loving this new diet and eating loads. He has been getting water with pomegranate juice squeezed in and a drop of cider vinegar.
Also, medicine of Metacam and Tramadol.
The first 2 days he was home from the vet he was very sleepy and miserable and we were worried about him, but on day 3 the difference was huge. He perked up and started chatting, playing and being cheeky. Since then his mood has been consistently happy and he is wanting to be out and about with his friends. Apart from his leg, you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with him. He has started curling his lame foot into a ball and using it as a kind of stump to get about on.
I am trying to be realistic about what the vet told us but also don't want to give up hope. I thought if he was so bad and only had 2 weeks left he wouldn't be acting the way he is just now. He is currently out with the flock and giving Custard kisses.
Usually he has free run of the house all the time, but we have been mainly keeping him in our bedroom to help him rest more, and bringing the other birds in for visits, then maybe 3 or 4 times a day, letting him out the room to have a fly around the rest of the house so he doesn't feel left out and still leader of his gang. His flying and landing his great, even with his wee foot.
I really hope this new diet and the herbs etc are helping him. There certainly isn't a decline so far which is great.
Here are some photos of him over the past few days. When in our bedroom he has taken to sitting up on the fur collar of one of my coats I had hooked onto the wardrobe door. The fur is soft and warm for him to sit on and he refuses to budge when on it. So guess who can't wear her favourite coat anymore, which is currently covered in poop!
