Lemonades vet visit went better than expected today. The vet was a bit baffled as he had expected him to be in a bad way from the notes that the vet school had faxed over to him, but he said that he looked pretty good apart from his leg. He was pleased. He said that from the notes he had, that he would have expected him to have been very underweight but with a big swollen abdomen, silent and sleepy, basically given up. But he was none of these things. He is a good weight, bright and animated and he said he is not in pain. However, his leg will not improve, that he was sure of. He said it was more of a disability now rather than a painful injury. We have to just continue as we are at the moment with meds, good food and supplements and lots of love and care (and hope) We have another appointment in 3 weeks time to monitor his condition. I am just so happy that he isn't showing a decline. I just wish I knew exactly what was going on and that budgies could talk and tell us! Feeling a little bit better after this appointment today

Good news about Lemonade. He is a real fighter and will not let his bum leg keep him down. He's an inspiration to us all. Good job.

That's lovely to hear! Lemonade (and you) are doing really well. He clearly isn't in any discomfort and is happy. Here's to the next good vet visit!

That is about as good as the news you can get, I am sure. So glad he is still holding his own. You are doing all the right things for the little man. What did the vet have to say regarding the supplements you are giving him? Some can be very sceptical about holistic approaches, while others are very supportive.

The vet said he was amazed at everything we have done regarding supplements and hostilic approach. He seemed very pleased and joked that our budgies must be eating better than us now. (To be honest that's kind of true, mornings used to be a half an hour sit down to breakfast and coffee before work, now that half an hour is budgie food prep and medicine time and I'm lucky if I gulp a mouthful or two of coffee ) But yes, he was supportive and recommended we keep it up. All the other birds are eating the new foods too which is good. Lemonade has had a good day today. He is chirpy and bright and had a visit from my mother in law. We have put fleece / soft fabrics over his landing places so that he doesn't irritate legs and feet on the hard surfaces through leaning to the side. He has been lying down for his naps, all nice and snug

Let's hope Lemonade has many more good days to come.
Have you got a flat perch? I wonder if that might be helpful for him if his foot isn't working.

I have 2 big flat perches, but the wood had started rubbing the skin on his leg joint that he was leaning on. If I could find some kind of suitable fabric that wouldn't catch and be safe , I would like to cover one of them for him

I wonder if there is a type of heavy surgical fabric-type bandage you could wrap tightly and fix with one of those metal bandage clips. It will get pooped on, but they are washable.

What about tight weave cotton, like a pillow case. So, it could have a layer of softness around the flat perch, like the bandage and the cotton could slide over like a tea cosy/custom fit pillow case . Are you any good with a needle and cotton? Could be cut to shape and back stitched. And like Stace says, washable.

I know what you mean, lemonade, regarding the morning ritual. I used to do the same thing with Blue while he was sick, giving up my weekly coffee outing to be at home and make up his mull. All your work is already paying off in that he is still bright and chirpy. Something like a pin-cushion with a washable covering would be the go for his wee little foot.

The wee man is still fighting away. He is a proper soldier! I am proud of him for not giving up and letting whatever this is take over. Medicine time isn't good though. I read ffiscools thread about Bailey and the syringe and letting him think of it as a toy .... Unfortunately Lemonade knows too well what the syringe means and squirms and wriggles and makes a proper drama out if it! I feel awful but he needs his medicine. Not much else to report on his condition. He just needs loads more attention and care so that's why I haven't been on the forum so much. I'm just looking through the site now and seeing how everyone's buds are doing

How big an amount is the medicine? If a drop, can it go onto a food he will eat?
How is he in himself?
