As some of you know I have had a stroke. I spent the night with a horrible migraine, my first since the stroke. This morning I was very shaky and one of the cages has two doors. When I open the big one to change the water the little door opens as I close the big door. I developed a reflex to push that door closed each time however this morning the reflex didn't kick in. I guess I was too out of it. When I came back into the room with the clean water bowls the cat was sitting pretty watching the birds which were one foot above her on the cage of their buddies. She could have easily jumped up and grabbed one. I think she may understand that I love them or something because she does this jaw snapping when she sees birds outside. She doesn't do that with my birds. For whatever reason I got really lucky and she had not touched them. I let out a "OMG" and she ran out of the room. I am so lucky, my birds seemed not to get that they were in danger. (Allie and Noah). I am just glad nothing happened. I am going to add security locks on the small doors. Added a bread clip temporarily.

oh poor you, what a fright!! thankfully all ok and yes, your cat probably does know they are not to be touched, but,........
Maybe she is also confused as to why they are indoors and not outside
maybe you can just use a bit of something budgie proof, that they wont chew, to tie it closed

I am thinking of buying something I saw online for doors. I have to try to remember where I saw them. I believe they were stainless steel clips. I closed the door to the room for now because Allie and Noah are still visiting pals in there. I found it: do you all think this is safe. It says it's nickel plated. www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+11295+5797&pcatid=5797

Does seem big. Look at the sizes on natural bird link I posted as then you could see sizes and go by thst I see they are 6mm. I will find those and stainless steel. I wrote to the company so I should get a response shortly. In a store they sold zinc plated crap to my husband and told him they were stainless steel. Luckily I read the box. That was eyelets though for hanging toys on a wooden beam. I don't trust the salespeople anymore in hardware stores.

Nickel plated is okay, as long as it doesn't rust. You just have to keep checking them all the time and then throw out if any sign of rust appears.
It's a bit humid where I live so the nickel plated steel rusts up really easily. When you wash it, you need to dry it very thoroughly, especially in the joins. Zinc coated is the bad one if it's chewed.
If you buy stainless, it's a bit harder to source and a bit more expensive, but you don't have to worry about it. And you can easily wash it without rust appearing.
