Following the thread below about poor little Boris and his worrying ailments, I've just heard from my friend whose daughter owns him: We think we may have found the problem - [daughter] found [brother] spraying deodorant and hairspray in the lounge this morning and has been doing so for the last 3-4 weeks, ( whoa there were fireworks I can tell you!). [teenage son] just didn't think about it - he will now! So we cleaned out his cage thoroughly and we are going to spray him to clean him off...
On a good note Boris does seem a bit happier today and the vet absolutely loved him - he was a perfect little patient! So here's hoping Boris will soon return to his former glory!

ooh.. sounding good! shame about the sprays, and hopefully it will clear now and Boris may have had a small irritation from it all...
I personally cannot bear it when people in the office spray perfume.. i have sensitive sinuses and the aircon carries it..

Yes, and when you think what evil chemicals are in just about all these things nowadays ...

Ooh! I can imagine the sparks flying! I go mental at my family if they spray anything near my budgies, even if its in the next room. I'm glad you've found out now and stopped him x

A good lesson to be learned. What can be irritating to us is even worse for a poor little budgie. Hope Boris is feeling like himself again very soon.

Glad you have found the cause, however, unless there has been a budgie owner in the family it is understandable that the dangers of these sprays would not be known. Just imagine how many people have killed their pets without knowing they were the cause!!!

Just imagine how many people have killed their pets without knowing they were the cause!!! Gosh yes, that's a very scary thought! My friend DOES know about the dangers - and I'm sure she'd warned her children. Trouble is, can't rely on a teenage boy to remember, when his grooming is the issue of the day!

I'm so glad that you found out the cause and eliminated it. Hopefully Boris will be feeling better.

I see two points in your post to be happy about, rose ...... first and foremost being that the cause of Boris' respiratory irritation has been named and shamed .......... the second being that said teenage boy is actually going through a process of grooming every day!!! There is many a teenage boy who completely skip this step in their personal hygiene ...... some avoid the whole personal hygiene step completely!!

Good points, Hezz! Though I would be perfectly happy to have all the teenage boys on the planet with no personal hygiene at all if they left the poor innocent budgies out of it!

One well-known fact regarding teenage boys ....... brain has a habit of disconnecting at random intervals. There is also something called selective deafness - not necessarily confined to teenage boys, though. Teenage boys with NO personal hygiene routine? Please, no!!! Especially here in the tropics ........ they PONG!!!

Gosh yes, Hezz - it hadn't occurred to me what an ABSOLUTE DISASTER it could be in the tropics!

I am happy to say that my boys are addicted to their showers, thank heavens, but they still get wiffy without deodorant. Poor Drew went through a phase where the soap just wasn't doing the job, so he tried my body wash .... not more smelly armpits.
