Here's a question for all the great parrot behaviorists. Some know I've inherited a hen (Goldie) from the great beyond - points unknown. We've been in captivity together since August.
Are these occasional light bites of the nose through the bars (and not always with bars in the way) considered affection? I'm always trying to build trust and use happy language and even happy eye-contact. I'm wondering if there's a general consensus that tracing the nose with the beak is a sign of "I like having you here". I won't any more effusive than that.
Goldie is about to go for a ride up the US coast a bit, for the Holidays. She's got a cage-in-car ride in her future. Fortunately, I'm not also the driver.

It sounds like she may be preening you. If it's just gentle and doesn't hurt.

That's the way it is. Sounds good to me. I need occasional preening.

That's the way it is. Sounds good to me. I need occasional preening. It's lovely isn't it, to know your bird loves you. My conure gives us a good old preen, tries to get into all the pores on your skin and chews the bits of skin off our fingers. Can be painful sometimes when there is a stubborn bit and he pulls hard. My African Grey pulls my hair up and twiddles it through his beak like they do with their feathers.

Sounds def loving to me.
I would like to just think Bailey is heavy beaked with his 'preening', but....

This sound like preening to me too. They gently trace their beak along, gently tasting their way. If they find hairs, they try to smooth them out, and if they find a rough spot on your skin, they try to remove it. They also use their beak and tongue to investigate things, like we'd use our fingers. They feel and taste things to see what they are: how solid they are, what texture they are, what they are made of. Boo likes to preen my eyebrows. I wish he were able to actually pluck and reshape them for me at the same time. Their eyesight and the accuracy with which they can do this is amazing. The budgie beak and tongue is a very sophisticated and highly evolved bit of kit.

Doesn't that make your eyes water. Sting is not the word, it's so painful, they always get just the right bit to make the most impact. Wham, and the tears are flowing. Little darlings.

OMG yes it does! Worst one which you may of heard of before was the eyelid I did not realise that so much water could erupt from one pair of eyes in such a short space of time!
