Brodie has started moulting again & yesterday he lost his tail, he still had one which I assumed he had grown in in expectation of said moult, this is how my previous budgies have operated for want of a better word. However today Brodie has moulted his new 'spare' one, does anyone know why? He's not distressed or acting in any way different to his usual so I'm pretty sure he didn't have a trauma in the night. I'm sure he'll grow another one soon enough, it just seems a bit odd!

I've not seen Joey lose a tail feather in the moulting stages he's gone through. I didn't know they did moult the tail feathers. Seems like I'm going to learn something else. I hope it's nothing untoward.

Mine have all moulted tail feathers. I assumed it was normal as part of the moulting process. I'm sure Brodie will be fine

It just seems a waste of energy growing a new tail then promptly losing it! He's had a good fly zooming around the room excitedly so it hasn't affected his flying. @op, Misty used to lose his tail once or maybe twice a year so not with every moult.

They have 2 tail feathers so he has just moulted both and will grow them both back. Nothing unusual and nothing to worry about.

Ohhh when I was in the pet shop I saw two budgies that looked a like. FinFin and another one, who sat all fluffy with closed eyes. I did not choose him because he was all fluffy and sleepy, while all the others were active. But this one had also no tail feathers and I thought he was sick. But it seems he was just in the molting process...

They don't usually moult out both tail feathers in a short space of time, but it does happen occasionally and you end up with a "stubby budgie". But nothing to worry about, if the feather was only moulted out and not knocked out. Actually they have a mechanism in the wild where they will lose both tail feathers to avoid a predator (can't remember where I read this), and no tail feathers doesn't seem to affect their flying in any great way.

Sounds like his moult has gone a bit out of sync! Keep an eye on him just in case, but you should notice in about a week his new tail feather will be just about as long as the current longest feather on his tail. He will grow a replacement that fast if he's healthy.

My hen always loses both feathers at once. She is currently tailless.

Yesterday Brodie lost one of the feathers that now makes up his tail, one of the shorter tail feathers, I just hope he doesn't lose anything else! So far his flying is unimpeded & he's as happy as can be, I guess he's just a little enthusiastic in his moulting & as tinker says a bit out of sync!
