It doesn't seem like I am doing much at all except providing the right environment for budgies. It's not rocket science but some people seem to think it is unfortunately.
Emptying seed bowls before refilling seems quite normal to me but when I was blowing the seed off the top of their bowls I saw something strange. It was some sort of grey dust. Digging deeper I realised it was old seed crumbs, for want of a better description. What I thought was a lot of seed for a budgie turned out to be mostly dust and in the bottom it was compacted and stuck to the pot. I wouldn't be surprised if the pots had never been emptied.

You mean in the seed pots they were using when you got them? Ewwww!! Yes that's right Hezz. There were 2 huge bowls in the cage I have to give back so I put one of the bowls in the other cage thinking no budgie needs that much seed. Then found the grey dust, it was quite shocking, goodness knows how long it takes to get to that condition.

Even the most novice of novices shouldn't allow things to get to that stage. It is neglect pure and simple.

When talking to her you would think her birds were kept in perfect condition. She made me feel ashamed that I only clean my aviary once a week. She went on about how she cleans the cages out every day and it's disgusting how some people just leave them for ages etc. On the surface her cages did look clean the birds had plenty of food, too much, or so I thought, but looking deeper the truth was there. There was a pot in the cage with some kind of crumb in it. I took it out to look at it and still can't work out what it was. I binned it and it too was caked to the bottom. There were so many pots of stuff in the cage that there wasn't any room to fit any more along both ends. All the pots were discoloured too, sort of dirty yellow.

Lucky birdies to be out of that environment. People are funny regarding what they see as acceptable and what isn't ........

Budgie care means budgie pride, I think this forum promotes that.
There was a time when mom's were at home and their biggest pride was how their kids were dressed and fed. Mom's would share and compare notes just like we do here. Sometimes what they said was also different though then what they did. I remember thinking that the mom next door seemed perfect. She kept telling me how she taught her kids to do the dishes and cleaning ect. I always got stuck with the dishes, lol.
One evening right after supper I could see the kids doing the dishes in kitchen. The window had a view of my yard. I noticed this because we were on a school committee together. I needed to get her to sign some papers and wanted to make sure her meal time wasn't disturbed. When I got there as we were talking I notice the driest, dirtiest overflowing sink of scummy dishes where someone had just pretended to wash dishes for about twenty minutes. It was a bit mind blowing.
Sometimes the biggest talkers are not the doers.

All the regulars on this forum really do pretty much all they can to do the best for their buds. Even those who come on from time to time who have not are, at least, trying to seek out information. Many do not bother, so I never want to be too hard on them. It's especially hard for those from many non-Western countries. They often simply don't have the resources or the long-developed culture of pet or animal husbandry that we have.
