Evening everyone and a merry Christmas.
I haven't mentioned this before but my Ozzie has been unwell for a few weeks and i took him to the vets where they have given me antibiotics (baytril) to give him. He is to have one drop twice a day. I have another budgie, Daisy, also on them but she is reacting to them fine. She shakes her head a little but that's it. The past two doses i have given to Ozzie he has reacted really badly. He shakes his head violently over and over again. So much so that he falls over if he is sat on my hand. He is also splattering a bit of seed when he does this. I am really concerned that it is causing him more harm than good. Has anyone else's budgie had a reaction like that to baytril?

Can't help specifically but I seem to remember hearing of rare reactions to Baytril. There are some other similar antibiotics available, so maybe you can get another type.

Sorry to hear Ozzie is not well. Not sure about bad reactions to baytril, Rachael, but being of the flagyl group of AB's I imagine it tastes pretty awful! Is he a finicky or fussy eater? Adept at noticing new additives to their water? It is hard to say, but I am hoping he is simply reacting to the horrible taste!

He isn't too fussy an eater and i haven't noticed him reacting strongly to anything I put in his water but I imagine it tastes horrible too. Daisy definitely pulls a face when she has hers lol. I need to speak to my vet to find out what to do but with it being Christmas they aren't open. I am hoping they are open tomorrow so i can ring and ask him for an alternative.

Also, perhaps you can mix it in with some fresh juice to disguise the taste.

could you use a crop needle, that way I don't think they 'taste' it x

Great idea for those who know now to use them, Gaile. It's a pity there aren't dummy birds like there are human dummies to practise this sort of thing on.

I must admit to being a little wary of crop needles. Mostly because I have never used one. I thought I had perfected the method of giving the antibiotics the way a previous vet showed me but Ozzie is a wriggler.
I gave him his morning dose earlier and he didn't react as bad this time or bring up seed so fingers crossed it was just the shock the first couple of times. I am going to see how he copes with his second dose tonight and decide from there x

Also, perhaps you can mix it in with some fresh juice to disguise the taste. It's literally one drop from a small syringe Stace so it would be hard to tell if he drank it I think, if I mixed it with something

Second dose given for today, no bringing up of seed and he only shook his head three times His breathing doesn't seem to be getting any better though :/

Good news on the meds, bad news regarding no improvement. Would a humidifier or similar help, do you think??? What did the vet say was the problem, with Ozzie?

I watched a video on you tube to see how to use a crop needle

Sorry its taken me a few days to reply, work got in the way. Ozzie is a lot better about taking the antibiotics now, he hasn't brought up seed since. However he seems to have little energy :/ he isnt sleeping during the day but he doesnt sing at all hardly and isn't interested in his favourite swing. Today is day seven of the baytril and I haven't seen any real change in his breathing. Looks like he will be going back to the vets this week

Glad to hear he got over that initial shock, Rachael, but I'm sorry to hear that's he's not very well. I hope the vet will be able to provide you with some more help and that he'll get better.

Sorry to hear this, Rachael. I hope you have better results with the vet this next time round. We do wish Ozzie the best of health, C'mon Ozzie. Show us you can do it.
