skysmum: My "Sexy Scarlet" heliconia, finally showing off her assets. The too-bright sunlight bleaches the colour somewhat. Unfortunately, Sexy Pink had to move corners, she was getting crowded out, therefore needed a nip and tuck, a shame really as she was getting a flower as well, but only one. And I remember you saying glang-glang being one of your favourites. Ours is in flower now:

absolutely beautiful, hezz - we northerners need a supply of this tropical glory whilst we are in the depths of the year - today was exceptionally bare, grey, wet and cold

Well, I do hope they brightened up your day, birdguhl. ATM I cannot imagine how cold you must be feeling, as you could not imagine the tropical heat and humidity, I'm thinking.

Ohhh wow they are just beautiful Hezz, mmmmm i can smell the ylang ylang from here. The flower of the Ylang looks a bit like the witch hazel that we get here, that smells lovely too. Thank you, its made me feel nice and warm on what is proving to be a miserable wet cold gloomy day On the plus side we haven't had many frosts so my banana plant that i took into the greenhouse is looking pretty good as is the strelitzia, which ive had for 5 years and still waiting for a flower .

That looks beautiful. It would be nice to live in the tropics. You need so much less "stuff".

lovely!!!! its not the only thing that needs a nip and tuck-where can i go for that LOL!!! Moogs, you darling little thing! I hardly think it can be yourself you mean. Anyway my sexy harlots just come to me; I attack them with a machete!!! I think you would be looking for a little more finesse than that! PS skysmum, please excuse my spelling mistake - not sure how I missed it not once but twice - ylang-ylang it is of course. Sitting on the deck last night breathing in her lovely perfume, I did think of you again. As for the strelitzias, what is it with these things??? Mine has flowered once but not again. I think they need too much tlc for my kind of gardening.

No prob, i had to do spell check, i thought it was me that had it wrong Ive had three Strelitzias over the years, one i brought in flower and the others not and ive never had another flower while they have been in my care so god knows what they like its not my place for sure. Dont think i will have another.

Thanks, Sam. Tropical plants are beautiful and very different sometimes, but right now I would give it all up for a lovely cold frost! Hot, hot and hotter, the humidity is climbing every day. We are due some rain by week's end, but birds are still raising chicks so I very much doubt it will be the beginning of our Wet. Check out this little one: I say little as it was about ruler-height. There is a giant version in our botanical gardens that grows over 6' high ....... they are called amorphophallus and are not what you would have beside your kitchen window. The smell coming off the big ones is reported to be like rotting meat. I have never found the need to go smell it myself, but it's common name is "corpse flower". I am happy to say my little guy doesn't have this sort of stench, but I wasn't putting my nose into it either. PS You can see where the -phallus part of the name comes from ...........

I was going to say er....how phallic it looked! And I have heard of these before with their aroma - is it true that the reason why it has a smell like rotting meat is so that it attracts insects into it?
