Do storage heaters contain Teflon? I'm thinking not but I don't really know & the flat Brodie & I are hoping to move to next week has them. Thanks for any advice!

Sorry but I know next to nothing about storage heaters. As far as I do know they are made of a heat retaining substance, for example brick, stone or the such like. The are electrically heated at a high rate of amps and then release that heat over a long period. What the outer casing is made of/coated in I have no idea. I actually thought they had been phased out many years ago. The main reason they are not installed these days is the weight of the things. They needed a well supported floor to stand on. Things may have progressed as the years have gone by and better heat retaining materials may be used now. I would have thought the outer coating would be ceramic rather than Teflon, but there again I now little about the make up these days. Sorry I can;t help further.

I have storage heaters but no budgie yet (I get him on Saturday woohoo) I didn't even contemplate they maybe a problem so would be interested on any replies. they are just huge stones that get very hot (like a breeze block style stone) they are encased in a metal housing but I don't know what metal they are one would assume the same as radiators! my work colleague has a budgie and I believe I heard her say she was looking forward to her move to be rid of storage heaters her budgie is 5 so I'd assume they were ok x

Thanks for the replies. Storage heaters have to be one of the worst ways environmentally to heat a home & I find them quite baffling, most of the heat is released v early in the morning. I had Misty in with them a year ago & he was fine however they had to be replaced & his only time near the new ones was when he fell ill so I wondered if there was a connection. I'm almost certain that it was a coincidence as none of his symptoms fitted with contact with Teflon (&he was ill for 3 weeks before he died, Teflon seems to kill instantly?) but it's always been in the back of my head. He was almost 15 so I'm pretty sure he died of old age! Just a little cautious about Brodie.

I don't have an answer to your question about them being harmful, but I do agree with how bad they are to heat a home. My mum had them until a few years ago. Her house was freezing from late afternoon and all night, then about 4am they would come on and the heat would be too much through the morning. She got them ripped out and central heating put in with the help of a government grant.
