Not sure if this is the right spot to post this! When I uncovered my guys cage this morning I found blood on two of their food bowls and some of their perches. I did panic and inspected every single bird (and all their droppings) I was not able to find any blood on the birds. NOTHING AT ALL! It still worries me, because I don't think it comes out of nowhere! Any ideas what could have happened?

Sounds and looks like it could be a broken feather, one of the large flight feathers. I get this with my Jo who is a french moult.

That is indeed very strange - and alarming. The blood looks quite fresh (i.e. red). It's hard to believe that blood could have got onto dishes and perches without being evident on the bird too. Do they seem ill / different in any way at all?
It's probably not this but I once got a fright when I was using a food mix which contained petals - I think hibiscus - which when wet made a red streak on the floor. There's no chance it could be this?

I had a broken tail feather before. And I remember more blood in the cage and traces of blood on the bird for days. (Freaked me out!) The blood on the perches looks like footprints. Not drops like on the bowls. The birds are perfectly clean! Not even a tiny speckle of blood on them! I checked the cage and toys for sharp edges etc. NOTHING! No red petals in the food. I checked the ingredients and the seed mix. Every single one of my guys is acting normal. Very active, hopping around, playing, singing... They do bath a lot, non of them were wet when we took them out to check for injuries. I doubt that it washed off. I am baffled! I have been sitting in front of their cage, watching them every free minute today.

I thought a massacre had taken place when i uncovered mine one morning. I could smell it before i took the cover off, they bleed like the devil and walk it everywhere. The other thing could be that one of them has caught his claw, they bleed alot to.

Could it be underneath a foot? Do you have a sandy perch at all? If you look at the position it could be a toe. Usually blood feathers breaks will cause splatter on the walls.

Well.... Mystery solved and I feel like a fool! I checked everything 'fleshy' on the guys and forgot the nails. (Major brain fart!) Little Jill broke one of her nails off. Thank you all so much <3

Poor Jill. The claws would one of the first places I would check with this sort of thing. When they get a claw caught they do often get a little panicky and just tug and tug and tug to get free. Has she ripped the whole claw out, or just broken it off?
My first budgie sat on OH's razor once. He was fine while just sitting there, but when he went to launch himself and fly off, he cut his claw too short and bled like a stuck pig. For future reference, a soft cake of soap is great for stopping the bleeding on claws - once you have caught the bird you can put the cake of soap in the way of their feet and they will automatically close their feet and claws around the soap. The soap needs to be soft and quite soggy so it will stick to the bleeding claw/foot.

It is not too bad! She just happened to nick the quick a tiny bit. The nail is not much shorter than her other nails. It is hard to see and if you don't look real close, (and you are lucky and she wont hop and climb all over the place for a second) you can see that the nail is not as pointy as the others. I have Quick Stop on hand, because I cut and file my dogs nails. So far I did not have to use it, but I am one of those 'plan and prepare for the worst' kind of person...

Well done for finding what it was, I can imagine the worry you must have gone through! Was going to recommend cornflour just in case you didn't have any way of stopping it as that always is a good thing to use. And was also advised in emergency that for dogs a cold teabag stops the flow of blood if they break a nail because of the tannin Thankfully, no real harm done!

The soap needs to be soft and quite soggy so it will stick to the bleeding claw/foot. You need to be careful of the type of soap you use if you use soap instead of cornflour. Soap can cause major stinging because of the ingredients in some bars. You probably wouldn't be aware of whether you are causing him extra distress or not either.

That is a very good point tinker. I would be wary of soap too because they scratch their heads so much I'd be worried they get it in their eyes. Maybe Hezz knows what kind is safe though.

Well, you can worry about all and everything, but if your bird is bleeding, and it doesn't take much for a budgie to bleed out and die, I'm stopping the bleeding first and foremost ....... you are not going to worry about the soap getting into its eyes if its dead! It is a stop-gap measure, is faster to apply than trying to hold a foot and focus on a claw...... cornflour wouldn't stick. It is a solution provided to me by my vet ..... no-one else has to use it. But then I don't use perfumed soaps and the like ....... plain old pure Sunlight soap is what lives in our laundry...... It is the added extras that cause the grief.
