... in the bird. I bought a multivitamin that says to put it in water or egg food. I knew there was a risk of it spoiling my budgies love for eggs. So I decided to use a code and mash the eggs so they know that their usual boiled intact egg does not have the gross stuff on it. Just in case it tasted bad. Apparently it does taste bad. My avian vet said not to put vitamins in water. I don't know how I am going to hide these things in something. I guess I could try making boiled oats tomorrow and adding some when it's cooled for them. It's not Guardian Angel I wonder if that stuff tastes better for the bird. What is the best thing to hide vitamins in?

All the vitamin supplements that I have seen are made to be dissolved or diluted in water. My question is the same as ffiscool's .... Why??? Or rather, why not?? My birds have something in their water every day, whether it be ACV, vits, calcium etc etc. So there is no point in them holding off drinking till the next day ....... the next day's dose might even taste worse!

The avian vet was adamant, and I have read what she said before in many forums. She said it causes bacteria to grow rapidly. She may have other reasons as I remember she gave me pamphlets to read. I did read them but I can't remember what it said. I threw them out because after a while this place gets so cluttered. I could ask her again the next time I have to go. These were the papers. To be a vet you have to be very smart. In our country they need to have the highest scores in college to get in. It's harder to get into this program then it is to get into medicine. When she said this she became very severe, she knows I forget things and it's the one thing she really stressed. "No vitamins in the water!" then a stern look.

I have been adding in water for the last 15 years without noticing any major problem.
It is clearly stated on the bottle as well.

I put vitamins in my birds water and it developed a slippery greenish biofilm around the inside sides of the container which was very hard to clean completely off and then started reappearing every evening after no vitamins and sitting out for a whole day. I ended up buying new containers. I purchased larger containers than before so that any bacteria growth would hopefully be more dilute. The last thing you want is a crop infection in your flock.

That's a good point about the water quality too tinker. It may be more of a problem in some regions and local vets may know this. I've heard many reports about algae in lakes around here. I use bottled water but I have no proof it's any better besides my taste buds. I like the water from Maine best for taste (Poland Springs). It tastes like clean water from the lakes where we went fishing in the mountains when I was a kid. There are coniferous forests there. My daughters don't like it so much, it's not a taste they are use too.

It is fairly obvious, I would have thought, that if you don't start off with clean water in the beginning you are open to all sorts of contaminants. This is part of the reason I use boiled water or filtered water. My climate is very hot and humid, there are not many places more so, and I have not had problems.

I think this may be another case of you can go a tad too far? The main thing is as long as you keep your drinkers clean regularly by changing water daily (obviously) and using F10 to clean the drinkers and you can use Aviclens to add to their water to keep clean (just as long as it is not with other vitamin or supplements) - but if I also may make a suggestion when it comes to vits and minerals? These people are the experts when it comes to this sort of thing and in my experience would highly recommend their products. And they say you can administer in water: The Birdcare Company

All my birds get medicines and supplements in the water, in the same water bottles. This is the only way I know they are getting some. The water bottles are washed with soap daily and disinfected weekly.

Please do so and let us know what the vet's concerns are, as almost all breeders use water for vitamins and supplements.

We usually do the big testing when the tax returns comes. The last time (emergency care) it was near 400 dollars and we only learned that she had very much gas. Still it took blood samples and x-rays to see what was going on. She was acting like her two back legs were broke. Tax time is soon.
