I am glad the second vet has given you the opportunity to give Samson a concentrated level of care. It really can make a difference when the bird is getting low on resources. Regular crop feeds should see him pack on a little weight and hopefully allow him to find his appetite again. Wishing you and Samson all the very best of luck. I really hope he pulls through this.

Update: Vet has come back and said it's NOT chlamydia after all, his test results are clear for this. Instead, he tested positive for Aspergillosis (never heard of it). Just googled the symptoms and it's quite strange - his breathing is fine, and his only symptoms are the runny poo and weight loss. He's getting anti fungals and crop feeding but still very weak, poor wee soul.

Did the vet mention that stress can be a major cause of aspergillus taking hold? And, as Samson's condition started with the into of the cage-mate, did they suggest the second bird be screened as well? I have included a link to a thread from a couple of years ago, when Marianne Marlow's Blueboy was diagnosed with the same. She mentions a few things her vet recommended may help him ....... they may help Samson as well. I am sure Marianne won't mind me putting up the link, if it helps another budgie along the way........ budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/1064

Thank you for the links to Mabel's page, I've had a good read. I don't think Samson was stressed, he is too much of an alpha male to get stressed by the introduction of a tiny baby budgie. His usual reaction to the introduction of a smaller, weaker bird is to pin it down and try to - well, I'm sure you can guess the rest. . I always had to be vigilant about that. He is still at the vets, being medicated and crop fed. They said he can only take water in very small amounts as it makes him sick but, touch wood, doesn't seem to be in immediate danger. I will be having my other birds tested for aspergillosis.

A wee update on Samson: he has been with the vet for nearly two weeks. Although he is being medicated and crop fed, his condition is still very poor. His poo is still a strange greenish colour and he has failed to put on weight. I don't think they were especially worried, as he was quite chirpy, but tonight when I phoned for an update, the nurse said he has stopped weight bearing on one foot.
This could be due to the fluid injections he has been receiving in the leg, causing it to feel a bit tender. But the nurse indicated he'd been tolerating the injections well until today so it could be something more sinister. The injections are being stopped for the time being.
Assuming he survives the night, I'm going to visit him tomorrow after work with some millet.
