Thank you all for your kind words, I'm very touched. Samson would have loved so much attention, he was very self important.
The results of the necropsy were rather surprising. Although his pre mortem blood tests were positive for aspergillosis and post mortem revealed a high white blood cell count, the vet could find no trace of the disease in his body. What he did find however, was a very deeply buried tumour. Vet suspects it was testicular. Samson's cere never changed colour, and he only went lame on his final day. His only symptoms throughout the ordeal were runny forest green poo and latterly, extreme weight loss and fatigue. Vet was doubtful anything could have been done even with an earlier diagnosis.
At least the results explain why all the antibiotics had no effect. Vet said he found nothing that would pose a risk to my other fids, which is reassuring.

At least you have some answers now, Shirleyknot. Tumours are the bane of budgie-owners lives, I feel. You never know when they are going to rear their ugly heads.
Samson was a beautiful bird and he did well to continue as long as he did. He is in good company. RIP little man.
