There is very little difference between finches and canaries. How can you tell from a breeder's perspective?
Also, do people colony breed finches and canaries? Do they fight over nest and kill like budgies do?

What do you mean, how can I tell? Tell the difference between canaries and finches? There's big differences. It really depends on what type of finches you have. But yes, you can colony breed. Like, if you had some society finches, zebra finches, gouldians (you can mix others too.) together, they'd generally be fine. However, if you have more of the less domesticated finches, specifically like the weavers (which are very neat looking by the way) they can kill other finches. Those types of finches actually require more of a harem of females rather than just one other female. not all finches are the same, so it's best to do reading on each one.

Thanks I meant that in terms of breeding how you see them different from each other. Which are easy and which are difficult.

Oh ok. Well, for sure easy ones are zebras and societies. Societies can even make great foster parents to other breeds as well. Canaries seem to be quite a bit more finicky as well as waxbills, gouldians and others. I had one pair of gouldians, but after having them for almost a year realized they weren't my thing as beautiful as they are.

I am thinking of starting with Gouldians, shame they are not the easy ones

My question is ... why, when you have something as beautiful as that, do you want to go and change it??? They are native to my part of the world ...... aren't I lucky?

I didn't mean breeding in terms of making any (Show) changes to them But in general, things can be made better in birds. Like what have been done to budgies in terms of show qualities. For example, having the above bird with a crest on the head would be even more beautiful Extremely lucky

On this one, we will have to agree to differ, BB. I think Nature has done her job to perfection. And that is why I am no fan of the show budgie, sorry.
