Hello everyone! I'm new to the site here, but upon one of my other posts regarding budgies, I mentioned I was hand feeding a rare finch and a few others wanted to see it. So, here we go These are all stages of his growth and progress. He/she is a Society Finch. Not only is he an albino, he also has a double crest, plus a chin & a chest frill! As far as I know (based off some information a friend gave me that also raises frills) is that there are now only 2 people (that's including me!) that has this type of finch in the United States! Now that's something! The second picture in the collage is with his siblings. It was for perspective. That's how much smaller he was than his other 2 siblings. His story is that his parents were initially feeding him & I needed to give him supplemental hand feedings twice a day to help him grow stronger, but during that time, his parents decided he wasn't worth feeding anymore and just stopped. So, I've had to take over completely. In the process of trying my best to get him weaned a little.

Only two people, that's some achievement How long have you been breeding finches for. I have seen crested (single) finches and they look very beautiful. I am looking forward to see him fully feathered.

I had off and on before, but I just got to the point in my life where I could keep more of them and have a bigger collection, so about 2 years now I believe if not a bit longer. These societies are new to me. They came from a friend who was really into getting these different mutations. She bred birds and even won awards in shows and she's had/raised them for years. Unfortunately, because of her health, she had to give all her birds up. I got the good ones Believe it or not, I got this rare one with the first clutch they even had with me! So, super excited! I can't wait to see him when fully feathered either. He's close!

You are lucky, first with getting the good finches and then this one in the first clutch What do you use for breeding, nest boxes or open nests?

Nest boxes I was using the bamboo finch nests, but too nasty. I just made the switch to the plastic nestboxes so I could clean and re-use!

So, can nest boxes be used for all types of finches?
Any pictures or links of both types you used?

Well, the second one from the left pictured is a canary nest. Most finches don't like using this type of nest. The nest boxes I use are like the last one in the picture, except smaller and all plastic. There is one more type of finch nest not listed. Some waxbills like to use these. They're long a tube shaped.

So I guess that your plastic one will work for all finches.
