Hi I am a new budgie owner. I had 2 budgies when I was a kid so I know how to look after them and what's normal behavior etc. I got one budgie from my mother who couldn't keep it due to the dog getting jealous. I had him for about 2 months when I decided to get him a friend. All is well they get along fine they eat and poop etc. I recently noticed that the first budgies (Lucas) beak and cere looked somewhat dirty after close inspection I realised it wasn't dirt and more of a crust. I also noticed a little crustiness above his left eye. I did my research on the condition and from some of the photos I saw Lucas is definitely in the early stages. I need to know more about the condition though. Unfortunately I cannot afford to take him to a vet just yet I just wanted to know how long it takes for the condition to get serious are there any health problems associated with it and more importantly is my bird in any pain? I'm sorry for the wall of text I just wanted to share as much info as possible and thank you in advance

You need to get some Ivermectin 0.1%. You can buy it on line. You then follow the instructions but make sure the drops land directly on the skin on the back of the neck. You will have to treat both birds and clean the cage, toys etc in a good disinfectant like F10 which you can also buy online. Could you post a picture of your birds?
Oh and welcome to the forum.

What she said! But you will need to treat the bird two or three times to completely get rid of the mites. Once only is considered a preventative dose, not a treatment dose. It is easy to clear up if done immediately you notice anything; don't leave this go any longer. There are serious health problems if the mites are not treated.

Thanks for the info is the treatment expensive? I have very limited funds at the Moment unfortunately. Also how do I apply the treatment neither of my birds are tamed and they still get scared when I put my hands near the cage. And one last thing how long does it take for the scaly face to get very bad? I will post some pics as soon as I can.

Where are you in the world. If you google Ivermectin 0.1% you can see how much it will cost you. In the Uk it can be around £12 to £15. If I knew where you lived I could find some for you. You have to just be brave and grab hold of your birds. If you have someone who can help, get them to put the treatment on the skin behind the neck. If there is no one, hold the bird, gently blow the feathers apart so you can see the skin and put the drops on. You can watch you tube videos on how to do these things.

Forgot to answer you question about how long before it gets bad. That's a hard one to answer. If I had constant irritation and itching I would feel bad all the time so any degree will feel bad to the bird. This is a mite that burrows under the skin and can spread to the legs, feet, vent, and various places. It is best to treat it as soon possible or it will be harder to get rid of.

Do not wait! This would be really bad for the well being of the birds. Treatment for all sorts of things needs to be considered right from the outset. You need to make funds available for this type of thing, even if it is only a jar full of change that is added to every day.
