Hi, everyone, I bought a pair of budgie a week ago. The male is a yellow greenish cock (I don't know the name of the type exactly), and the other is a lutino. The seller said to me that it is a female, but i'm not sure if the lutino is a he/she. Please see the picture, and tell me. i know how to determine the gender of budgies, but this one is really confusing me, because she is a lutino. I want to breed them. And i've read everything that is important for breeding, and readying the cage for it. The lutino sleeps a lot, I think, She doesn't look like sick. But is not that active, as the male. She doesnot chirp more than the male. PLS help me, and it would be good if anyone can tell me what is her age? Not exactly in months or something, I know determining the exact age is difficult, But approx the range if someone tells, then very good! thnx everyone for reading. All types of necessary replies are welcome!

looks like a female to me. As for age it is difficult with that photo in that there is nothing to compare her size against. Because she is a lutino she has no head bars to help us. If she were a normal green or blue budgie we can tell by the bars on her head if she is younger than around 6 months. Some of the breeders who specialise in Lutinos may be best to tell you an approximate age. If she is around 6 months or younger, then she is too young to breed anyway, and you'd be best to wait until she was 12 months plus. You have only had them for a week, and she may still be stressed and unsettled from the move, so just leave her be and keep her quiet until she comes out of her stress. They sleep a lot and are generally lethargic when stressed. She may also have her wing tips dropped below her tail feathers, or even held away from her breast as if she was trying to cool down (they do this in stress or when hot). I had a female who was like it for about 2 weeks after a 2 hour car journey from the breeder. Mine seemed to come around after eating a fresh chop mix of hard boiled egg, coriander leaves, red pepper, parsley, broccoli, and some fresh crushed garlic. She absolutely loved it and woofed it down. it really helped her come out.

Yeah, guys, thanks everyone for the answer. So, i can now be sure that I've a perfect pair. And that of the age, I too thought that she is very young, to breed. So, I will definitely take care of them for upto 12 months+ I'm able to know the age by just looking into its eye ring (iris), But was just confirming! And dazandloz, you said correct, that it is stressed, it sleeps a lot and brings its wings down, sometimes it seems like sick. Here is a pic of both my budgies! It would be good if you can tell the age of the male, please. I think, it is older than 6 months, right?

Some of mine, including a Lutino who is nearly 2 years old doesn't show an iris ring, so that's not a given. Whether you have "The perfect pair" is yet to be seen. I bought two pairs who were apparently bonded, but one pair isn't. The other pair are but when I tried earlier this year to breed them they weren't interested. They still showed that they were bonded, but no actual "business" was happening, so I put them back in the flight and will try again at the end of the year. Do your birds have rings on their legs? I'd say the male is slightly older than the female, so you have to wait for the youngest bird to come of age. Hope this helps

Ok, but the male and the lutino, both have developed a light iris ring! I'm confused, if you guys say, lutino doesn't get iris ring, I see a light red iris ring! I would definitely wait for the lutino to come to good age, for I know the females must be slightly older for better breeding. And about the bonding, still they are not much bonded, as only since a week have got together.

The hen has red eyes, doesn't she? I feel that when talking of iris rings most are referring to dark eyed birds; the red eyes belonging to the lutinos and albinos.
