I have noticed a few little moths in the flat the last couple of days which I have just squished but I just found another three. I had a look before squishing and googled them and I think they are seed moths which I am now freaked out about. I am going to get rid of all seed and clean the cage and clean it in the morning as they are asleep now. I have ordered Aeroxon Xon071 Food Moth Trap which apparently are bird safe but I am still worried. Does anyone know anything about them and if they will hurt Bert & Ernie?

Ive had lots of little moths indoors too Mizloco and i don't keep the seed indoors, its in the aviary in sealed containers. I think its just that time of year, try not to worry, i don't think its anything to do with the bud seed.

Really? I've just spent a fortune to get rid of them. I get very obsessed and freaked out by bugs in my home due to an ant infestation years ago.

If you freeze all seed before use it will kill any bugs but not damage the seed. I had seed moths a few years ago. They laid eggs on the ceiling and we were infested for months. I had to go around the house squishing the larvae before they changed into moths. It was a heck of a job.

Yep, its because all the seeding grasses are out. When i let the dog out at night they are everywhere in the garden and the security lights attract them. Because i have the windows and doors open as its been so warm naturally they come indoors, little pests but nothing to worry about .

Starlingqueen beat me to it - putting all seed into the freezer for 24 hours when I buy it is what I do to make sure the seed is free of greebles.

I do the 24-hour freeze thing as well if I'm concerned about seed weevils. Then all those dry goods like rice, flour, cereals etc go into sealed-tight containers. They can chew through anything else. Also, get a heap of bay leaves and scatter them through your cupboards. Don't worry, mizloco about the bugs themselves harming the buds. You just don't want them infesting your cupboards. A few years back, my pantry suddenly became riddled with pantry moths (not the same as the grain ones) and it took several weeks to get rid of them. They'd come in on something from the supermarket which I'd stored at the back. I pulled everything out, threw away things they'd got into, cleaned out and killed everything else I could find and used those sticky moth traps inside that cupboard until I was sure they were all gone. As Boo couldn't get in that cupboard, I wasn't concerned. I had to repeat the procedure a couple of times.

I will do the freeze thing. Do you take it out after 24hrs? Does nothing come back once defrosted? Sorry to be dim.

The freezing kills anything that may already be there. I just use 24 hours as a goodly amount of time to make sure everything is dead. I am sure you could use a shorter time, but don't know what would be required, so to play it safe, I do a full 24 hours. I do then take it out, let it reach room temperature and then store in an air-tight container in the pantry.
