Does anyone here have any suggestions on nesting boxes that are inexpensive but serves their purpose? Our vet said that it may be a good idea to reduce some stress on Misty if she is in fact getting ready to go through her first cycle. As far as this goes though, I'm pretty much clueless.

Are you planning to breed?

I think the vet should join our forum so we can teach him. This is not a good idea, you only add a box for them to breed not for stress relief.

Are you planning to breed? No, not at the moment, but I will in the future. And I don't mean to create an issue here, but I think my A. vet knows what she is doing. She has gone to school to know how to do this and take care of these issues. It more than just relieving her stress. It's about finding out if she's really going into her cycle or not.

Why does it matter if she is coming into breeding condition? Hens and cocks do it all the time, it's just natural. If you provide her with a nest box she will want to breed, that could cause her and the rest of the buds more stress than just coming into breeding condition.

The whole point is to find out why she is having loose poops. We had her poo tested for giardia and parasites, and it came back neg. She is leaning towards her coming into her first cycle and this may be able to put that stress somewhere. Bottom line is, that I have an avian vet that suggested doing this. I didn't research this online on a BFE website. I trust her judgement being that she is trained for treating birds. If anyone has a suggestion on what could be causing the looser to watery poos, I'm open to suggestion. But please do not "attack" my vet because of her suggestions. It's not anyone's place to do so unless they are also a qualified avian vet. Plus she is the only one who is having the runny poos, no one else is having them.

No one is attacking your vet. It is just an odd thing for her to suggest. There are many reasons for loose poo. Drinking more water that usual, eating more fruit than normal or just that wetter poos are normal for that particular bird. If She is sick in any way adding a nest box and her wanting to breed will not improve her health. The vet may have gone to a school to learn how birds work but has she actual first hand knowledge of keeping birds for any length of time? There are breeders on here who have kept birds for many many years and know more about them and their behaviour than most vets, even avian vets. I have had bird for all my life and kept my own (that were not my parents) for 26 years. There is not very much about a birds health that I haven't dealt with.

Yes, she does have birds, not sure if she has budgies, but she let me know that she has had, or still has (she wasn't clear on if she still has them) conures. I'm not really that familiar with her background, as she is new to that particular hospital. Not sure how new she is to the field in general. I didn't mean for this to be blown out of proportion, or made into a debate, by any means. I am really just trying very hard to grasp any solution for this. I miss our normal A. vet. We have never noticed to loose poo until we moved her into another room for some home renovations. After about 4-5 days, we noticed her losing weight and having looser, almost watery poops. She was also less active, and almost depressed looking. We weigh our birds daily btw. We have since moved them back into their normal room and they have been there for about 6 days now, and she seems more active, less depressed, and has a seemingly better appetite. The only thing is, is that her poo is still watery. This morning she actually gave us a wake up call by ringing her bell for a solid 5 minutes. I just don't understand. She has no parasites, or protozoa, so I don't know what else could be causing the loose poos. She doesn't seem to be "eggnant". Right about now I feel like the worst budgie mama ever because I feel like I should have researched more before I even got them. I did sooooooo much research b-4, but it's never enough, is it? We are so paranoid after losing our one budgie, Holly, that I feel like we can no longer be objective, and non bias. I just don't know what to do.

To that I would also ask does your vet know budgies? Because all birds are different, and have their own quirks of nature. Give a budgie a nest-box and more often than not they will want to go into breeding condition, whereas another bird wouldn't be bothered. How old is Misty, and what changes have you noticed with her cere?

Like, I said she is new and I don't know much about her personal life in regards to her personal bird experience. Misty is about 1.5 years old,+-, and one half of her cere was a brown-ish color for quite a while, but it's back to white now. I'm starting to think that this A. vet doesn't know her @$$ from a whole in the ground regarding budgies.

Not sure if this is of any help, but I started a thread called "Who has hens?" in the General section of the forum. Have a read through that and see if that helps put your mind to rest. It may also be simply that Misty is reacting more to the renovations/moving than the others.

I really hope that's all this is, but I can't help but worry. Is there anything else that would cause the loose poos?

My response earlier was quite lame, your vet knows squidly squat. This suggestion is absurd. Take a deep breath, relax. Still with me, ok your hen has built up and stored all the goodies to breed, she don't need it so she is getting rid of it. At her age this isn't her first cycle and want be her last. All the best with Misty let us know how she gets on, things should be back to normal soon. In all seriousness tell the vet to join our forum, could save a budgie or two and thats all were about?
