All I seem to do on this website is ask for help sorry about that just a quick question, I have had Chip for just over a week now and we are having a great time so far! he can step up and is out of his cage for a good 3-4 hours every day, he sitting right next to me as we speak. But, I have a light fitted to my ceiling and he has a habbit of going up there, I bring how down instantly but sometimes he goes straight back up there. He has already broken a part of it and I am wondering if there is a way of stopping him from going up there, he is not fond of millet spray and he eats very small amounts of it and he is refusing to eat fruit and vegetables so far (but i'm sure he will come around) My question is, does repetition work without a treat? If i remove him from the light instantly everytime he goes up there, will it work? Thanks!

This brings back memories of when I had budgies flying free in the livingroom. They always wanted to sit on the light shade. The light shade lost is popularity when I hung some circular rope swings and a spiral rope perch from the ceiling. It didn't get them down to my level exactly but it saved the light fitting and shade;) You just have to make sure the wall plug holding the swing is secure enough or one of those expanding ones to hold the weight depending what kind of ceiling you have:)

I agree with Nat, You have to find a way of distracting them! I have had a nightmare with Abbie nibbling things, she is a destructive little thing! Had to resort to this at the top of my curtains to stop her going up there and biting the string that holds them onto the rail!! Things we do eh?!

I have found repetition works, but you do have to keep it up. Each and every time he goes up to the light you would have to get him down and the sooner the better. So having said that, I think you would be better off looking at a way to make it less attractive to Chip. Otherwise you may end up with no light at all, if he keeps breaking bit.

Hi, you mentioned he wasn't very fond of millet spray. Have you tried soaking it for an hour or two in water. Your bird may find it more palatable. Yours B.J.

My experience has been that if they love it up there no repetition or treat will work. I have always resorted to more practical solutions if there is a problem. I've never minded the light fitting location - they have proved robust enoust enough to handle all chewing. But you could of course replace yours with a hardier fitting. Marianne's curtain solution made me laugh! I had such a problem one when they wouldn't come down at night that in the end I got rid of the curtains and rails and replaced them with venetian blinds. Worked a treat because they no longer had anywhere to go!
