We all went to the vet again yesterday. A week ago I bought a wire cage to put them all in, so much better than the cardboard box! However, the chooks have grown so much I could only just fit them all in!!! Had to chase Georgie round the garden three times before herding her into the garden shed so she had no escape! Vet weighed them, listened to their breathing and has given them a good bill of health. She doesn't need to see them again unless I spot a problem. Such good news. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I am quite chuffed as the vet has now acquired two Orpingtons herself to go with her other chickens. So she must be well impressed with mine. Hers are a little younger and weigh more than mine, so it just goes to show how under-weight mine were on purchase. They have all put on weight tho and are well on the way to getting to the correct weight. Bea's comb is growing and has 'standy uppy feathers' round it, so vet said she will be coming into lay very soon. How exciting is that??? ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) The vet also recommended a 'chicken' book to me, which I subsequently bought. It is written by Fred Hams and called ..... The Practical Guide to Keeping Chickens, Ducks, Geese and Turkeys. I can't recommend the book enough. It is so comprehensive, from housing, rearing chicks, feed, diseases and has some brilliant colour plates describing everything, even to the peculiar eggs you can get initially when they first lay etc. I am rambling now, so I had better stop here, before it becomes a novel!

That's such good news! It must be a relief as you had a bit of a dodgy start and why not enthuse that things are now moving in a more positive direction? Happy hens, happy eggs and look forward to more happy days! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) P.S WANT MORE PICS! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

That's good news. I do feel for the other poor hens left in that woman's "care" though.

That's good news. I do feel for the other poor hens left in that woman's "care" though. Yes, so do I SQ. But I think on the positive side that the three I have will have/are having such a good life which they probably wouldn't have done. I am seriously thinking in due time of having two ex-batts! So good to see the good works that people are doing with them on the ex-battery forum.

I'm enjoying finding out about chooks too. Could someone copy and paste the link to that superb photo of one of them peeking in the window please? I wanted to show my mum but I can't find it again. Have the chooks got 3 distinct personalities? I know my two budgie boys have. I was talking about them to a friend and she remarked that's just pecking order but she's wrong of course. I feel sorry for people that don't believe animals have characters because they miss out on so much.

Hi JennyB. That pic is under 'They never cease....' heading in the 'other birds and pet' section, it's the first picture in the first thread, if you need me to send it to you in this link I can, just let me know. They do have different characters Jenny, I am still finding out things about mine. But, they are ALL so cheeky!! Are you thinking of getting some chooks then? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Hope so! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Thanks. No I've got my hands full with my first two budgies! I have ME so the boys are taking up the energy I have, I couldn't manage looking after anyone else. I'm enjoying learning though and seeing all the photos and hearing stories. Being cheeky seems to be a trait of many!

Sorry to hear that JennyB, I think perhaps I should have remembered this. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) That's good that you are learning and keeping occupied. Believe me there is a lot to learn about both budgies and chickens!

Here you are then samwiseg: you wanted more pics, more pics you shall have: We're sure there was a begonia on these bricks before!!!! ![](http://i61.tinypic.com/29247kj.jpg) they like to sit near me when I am sitting in the garden: ![](http://i61.tinypic.com/166eykx.jpg) ![](http://i58.tinypic.com/2z5vdqg.jpg) I'm sure this can't really be that comfortable: ![](http://i60.tinypic.com/ingv41.jpg) Now I have had to temporarily barricade the tomatoe plants, fingers crossed it will work until I can get something more permanent: ![](http://i57.tinypic.com/k4efee.jpg)
