I have 6 cocks and 3 hens in my indoor aviary. There are no nest boxes as I don't want to colony breed. All my hens have paired with a cock but one of my cocks is trying to steal the other cocks hens. Is this normal? He was the first one to have a mate as I originally only had one hen and 5 cocks. I re-homed 2 old ladies and they paired with the cocks, one being my FM. I am worried the FM may be bullied into giving up his mate although the first cock seems to be going for the other cocks hen at the moment, he seems to be defending well though. There isn't any fighting, he just seems to be intimidating the other cock and is always hanging around the pair, watching and trying to move in when the cocks back is turned.

Very normal.
I won't be surprised if he even fights him for her.

You originally had one hen and five cocks..... I'm no expert but isn't it better to have more females than males....males being.....males

Not to do with pairing up though,to do with stroppy, argumentative females I have five males and one female in one cage. The hen couldn't care less about any of them except maybe Milo but they aren't paired up. Alfie and JayJay are a pair, Rocky and Dill are a pair, and Milo chases Alf around, much to the annoyance of JayJay haha! Come to think of it...there's a bit of a bromance theme in my house lol!

Thanks Rachael, I'll have to practice thinking more like a budgie and less like a woman!

I'm no expert but isn't it better to have more females than males....males being.....males I had no intention of having any hens but one crept in disguised as a cock. I then agreed to re-home 2 "cocks", before seeing them, they were also in disguise. Believe me, things were much more harmonious before the the recent 2 turned up. These girls are a whole other species.

This thread has me wondering and it's very interesting because I've been thinking of getting another budgie to sneak into the 'flock'! (is two a flock!) perhaps just one more my husband wouldn't notice and it may help Sid with his boisterousness and help Mischief?......not sure.....have to find one anyway first but given me food for thought!
