Hello Everyone, My name is Wendy and the little feathered member of the family is Mike. We have had him about 5 weeks now and I want to know what i can so to try and get him a bit tamer than he is now. He is about 5/6 months old and has never been handled. I am now able to put my hand in his cage without him freaking but thats all, if I move it he tries to get away although he is not terrified. I have already got him interested in fruit and veg, especially grated carrot and shredded savoy cabbage. I have a lot of experience with parrots but my 32 year old Grey recently had to be rehomed because my son is suffering breathing problems after having Chemo and her dander was making it so bad he could not stay in the same room. Mike is not causing any problems like that and i would love to be able to show him I am a friend and not somone to be afraid of. Any tips would be much appreciated and tried. He is a beautiful deep blue and real little chatterbox too.

Welcome.
Can we see a photo of the little chap?
Sounds like you are doing well with him if you can put your hand in without freaking him out. Try tempting him to come to you with a little bit of millet and move slowly.

Just thought of another question. Is it ok to let Mike have a mirror while im trying to tame him. A neighbour said not to becuase he will bond with his reflection rather than me. I just do not want him to feel lonely when Im at work.

I have a budgie that is very bonded with his mirror, he would sit looking at himself all day if I let hin. I believe that it would be best to not give Mike any mirrors until he is hand tamed. There are lots of other toys out there that you can get for him to play with though Have you got a photo of his cage so that we can make suggestions on what toys to get etc?

I also have a mirror obsessed bird. I find he socialises with the others when I take it away.

Mike has gone to bed now so will have to wait till tomorrow to take apic of his cage. I have found a great place to get loads of toy making bits and pieces so will be buying one of the extra small sets. I used this site to get bits for my Parrot, Nelly, so I know everything is 100% bird safe. That way he will have so many bits to play with and I can remake and change toys to keep him interested.
