Not much done today, poor OH has been suffering with a tooth abscess and had to visit his mum so i was kind and let him off. I have critter proofed the open ends, OH said i was asking the impossible but i would like to see them try and get underneath it now. Im sure they will love it, they seemed much fitter and happier when they were in the old aviary . I keep going in and having a sniff sam, i love new shed smell, i think they should make a plug in, scent of new shed . I will try and fit in putting in the polystyrene insulation this week, i have it ready. Will keep you up to date as we go but there is no rush, unless we have an exceptionally mild winter they wont be moving in until the spring. My moose proofing

I would hate myself if I did not ask, so, is the sides of the shed going to be outside the aviary enclosure. That is is the wood of the shed going to be exposed outside of the netting?

Ummmm i think i know what you mean . No the only gaps under the shed are at the front by the door and at the back. I wanted to close this off completely but they and OH said it had to be left open for ventilation for the floor so i just put the very fine mesh back and front, i dont want mice lurking under it. The outside flight will be on the side which is tight to the ground. Im going for a raised flight which wont go right to the ground so that i dont get critter probs. It will be like a large sunbox but we have to reinforce the side that will take this. Its hard to explain, all will become clear as i update progress, this one has been very well researched and thought about, so could take quite some time . I want to get it right from the start.

I don't doubt for one minute you haven't thought this thing through. The thought that crosses my mind is the mice or the bigger cousins having access to the wood at any point. That's why I asked if the shed would be inside the perimeter of the wire. I wait with bated breath and intrigue.

I have it so that i and one very good mouser and ratter, my JRT can patrol right round it at any given time . I never had a problem with m's and r's getting into the shed part of my old aviary but in the beginning the occasional mouse got into the outside flight, until i fine meshed it, no more after that . They wont get a chance with this one.

Oh great stuff. I didn't know you had a night time patrol. I can rest with ease. I look forward to the finished project. I know that Summer is on it's way.

She'll keep the cats out as well I bet. Not that I have anything against cats. It's the owners that just let them roam free so they can use my garden as a toilet. I just wish they would take the newspaper back home with them, you know, the one they bring with them to read.

Nothing is allowed in HER garden , if she brings me a mouse she drops it by the back door, this is play, if i don't get rid of it straight away she will take it down the garden and bury it . Rats are a whole different ball game, this is serious stuff, i know if a rat has the cheek to even pass through the garden she wont let up until she knows its no longer about, cats, well they wouldn't dare, she even takes the fox's on . I just wish she would leave the baby birds alone though .

Only just caught up with this thread skysmum and am really looking forward to seeing the end result. Like you I had concerns about rats and mice getting into the chook run, that wire mesh does a brilliant job of preventing unwanted visitors.

Yes shirl i double meshed the outside flight of the old aviary with the very tiny stuff, it worked a treat , expensive though . I started on the insulation today as the sun made an appearance

Yes, it was lovely and warm here too. You are doing a brilliant job skysmum, your birdies will have a wonderful time in their lovely new home. How is Jo doing now, he was in a particularly bad moult last time I saw him on one of your threads?

How is Jo doing now, he was in a particularly bad moult last time I saw him on one of your threads? Thank you, and thanks for asking after old Jo, he is doing very well and enjoying the company of his brother and sister again. I have the old people together and the youngsters are in a different set up together and all is happy . Its been so lovely seeing him with the others that i plan to build a separate annex where the old people can be safe along with their own little bob hole out into their own smaller outside area, that's the plan anyway .

So you're going to build a granny flat inside the aviary then, skysmum? With ramps and hoists

What a great idea; you may need to think about a whole separate granny annex, so those pesky youngsters can't push the oldies off their perches inside as well.
