I had a horrible weekend... On saturday night Bubbles was really really quiet, you know how you just know they arent right? Well I had that horrible feeling and my stomach was churning, so I got up early Sunday and looked in the cage and still not looking herself. As I watched she did a nasty runny green water poo and started gagging, the smell from her mouth was like fish, really disgusting. Sunday too, I was so panicky! I rang the emergency vet number and asked if anyone who knew about birds was on duty. No was the answer, I felt so bad, Bubbles is my baby. I opened the cage door and she just sad on my shoulder snuggled into my hair for nearly an hour, I knew she was asking me to help her. The next vet I tried gave me the number of an exotic vet who lives about 22 miles away and he said he'd see her straight away. He said she's in really good condition but had a bacterial infection, but it hadn't taken its toll yet because I'd noticed the change in her early, so he gave her an antibiotic injection and within hours she was noticeably improved. Went back yesterday for some oral antibiotics for her and got to phone him tomorrow with a progress report. I have found a vet that knows budgies, hooray, and even better I believe Bubbles will be ok now! I'm so happy. I expect the bill will be truly horrendous but she's priceless and Mum will pay it on her Barclaycard if need be so I can pay her back as and when. What a relief!

I think that Canker usually makes the budgie have a fishy smell - someone will correct me if I am wrong.
You can get some Tricho-plus and put it in the water for this. But I do not know what your vet gave her so maybe he already treated for Canker!
Glad Bubbles is better. It's horrid when they are ill. I constantly worry about mine even if they sneeze cos they get some feather dust up their noses.

What a rotten weekend, Sarah! Glad though that you have found a vet you can talk to and Bubbles in on the mend. Hope things look up for both of you here on in.

Sorry you are having such a bad run of late. It's so hard sometimes. Let's hope everything works out for you and little Bubbles.
All the best, Stace x

Thanks guys, yes Marianne I wondered if it was canker, I don't know what the vet injeycted into Bubbles, he told me but I wasn't totally with it to be honest, I could only focus on the needle and my poor baby girl at that point. She's having meds directly into her mouth once a day now (that's fun for sure_NOT!) I can't read his writing on the bottle very well but it may possibly say Marsocyl! The fishy breath thing has gone anyway and she's eating, and her poops are on the way back to looking like poo, just a bit runny but the white and (currently dark green) part are separate, not just a horrible splat now. Rang the vet this morning and he seemed happy to hear all I had to tell him so got to keep with the meds 'til Saturday then ring him again. She is playing happily next to me and doing 360 degree turns around the perch to get my attention. She is a special little girl and I'm so proud of how brave she is and how quickly she's improving. Not that I don't still worry, you know how it is, but progress is progress so I'm happy with that. Sparky is looking pretty ok at the moment, but if she gets unwell again at least there will be someone I would be happy to take her to see.

It certainly points to canket Sarah which i might add is contagious and as posted i would treat all of your birds with chevi col or Thrico plus. I suspect the vet may have supplied you an antibiotic, you need more than that if its canker.

She has only been on the Marsocyl since Sunday and no treatment for canker, but the smell has gone.

Thats a relief then- wouldn't want to be treating the secondary problem if you know what I mean. Thank you so much for your help Barrie and everyone else too who has shown a concern for my lovely Bubbles.
