Hi, I have a problem breeding budgies. I had an old shed in which I used to breed budgies with no problem. Basic needs and seed. After a while I decided to progress. I had a brick built house built with insulation, heating lighting etc. lighting being full daylight. I feed with all seeds, tonic, soft food cuttlefish, grit vit. D added to water. My stock is good and looks healthy. I had internal nest boxes but have now added external boxes. The lighting is on from 7:00am to 10:00pm. Since putting external boxes on the cocks have been feeding the hens and sitting at the nest box perch and eventually the hens went in. The hens droppings became heavy with an odour. I have 6 breeding cages and all followed the same routine. All laid 5 eggs within days of each other. All are infertile. I have seen some cocks mating with the hens. If I had only one pair infertile I would investigate the cock and hen but all pairs have the same problem. I have invested a lot of money in the hobby and am now frustrated as it's not the first eggs that it has happened to. Can anyone help.if there is anyone near Hull that could meet to come and look at my set up I would greatly appreciate it Mike.

I have the same problem sometimes, I think they get too eager and don't mate enough! Did you leave the eggs for at least 6 days x you could fill the nest boxes with shavings so the hens have to work in clearing the box to use! in the mean time they should mate !

Thanks, they are young birds, just over a year and could be too keen. I will try the wood chipping trick. Will post again if I get success.
