Yesterday both of my budgies escaped into our tenants suite while she was coming to visit them, and both were frightened because of the new area. I brought the cage in and put it on a table. Topaz did not stop flying until he was unable to fly any longer, while Indigo sat on the cats scratching post (There is two cats. One of the cats was frightened to death when they came flying in, and fled. The other took a bit of interest, but wouldn't dare go out.). Once Topaz landed and calmed down, after a few tries, she stepped up and let me carry her to the cage. I tried to do the same with Indigo, but he refused to go in the cage. He had calmed down and was now looking forward to exploring. After a few tries, I managed to put her in. She had been perfectly fine with stepping up until then. I was really worried about them not stepping up and not wanting to stay on my finger. My fears came true, they refused to step up the next day, and Topaz's chewing on my finger increased. It took me forever to finger train them, and now i'm right back to the start. I'm willing to start from scratch, and I would like to know how to get them to trust me again, or whatever the problem is

Budgies are usually rather resilient little creatures and what has given you a fright doesn't necessarily compute the same way in their eyes. Stick to you normal routines for now, and I think you will find that in a day or two they will be back to where they were before their exploration. Also if you show apprehension, and expect changes they will pick up on how you are feeling towards them. You will need to act as normal towards them and don't get worried, stressed if they don't get it right the first time. You must have had bad days when training them in the first place ........ this is just one of those backward steps that we all have from time to time. Of course in times like these bribery with millet is always allowed.

I will. My normal routine is wake, feed, give them a scratch, let them out for half an hour. After this if i'm not doing anything, i'll come down to sit beside the cage reading a book, drawing, etc. Late afternoon I do some training, or just making sure they don't forget anything they know. In the evening i will let them out for another half an hour to forty five minutes, and then before they go to bed I scratch they're heads. If I need to change anything please let me know (Also, sometimes the schedule gets messed up, so i'm wondering if thats a problem..) It took me a few months to get them tame, and during that time this has happened to me multiple times and I had to tame them all over again. To get them to stay on my finger I would slowly increase the time before I give them one or two millet seeds, its not much, but it worked . Topaz chews on my finger, and its very painful.. With Indigo its just gentle nibbling. They always do it after or before I scratch their head, and they sometimes do it when i'm sitting with them on my finger. The odd thing is, if I move my finger, Topaz will follow it and continue chewing. Thanks!
