Hello!
This forum seems really nice and I am excited to be here. I have a few breeding questions. First, I would like to say that my male and female budgie are old enough to breed. My female is 2 and male is 3. I gave them time to bond before I placed a nest box on the cage as well conditioned them nutritionally with a breeding diet. When I am passionate about something I read and study. I ask a lot of questions too. :-)
My first breeding experience turned into a disaster. Out of 7 eggs, only one was fertile. (The last one laid.) Everything was going great the first day. The second day she started to go a little crazy. She still had the infertile eggs in the nest and later that day the eggs disappeared as well as all the nesting material in the box was moved and she was getting it out. I knew the possibility of her getting ready for another clutch could happen, I just didn't think it would be so soon to when she had her chick. Other people advised me to keep the fertile eggs to prevent double clutching. I noticed she was pecking at the new baby. It was bleeding and got thrown. We tried to save it.
The father has since died. She has three fertile eggs. The father was gone during this egg laying process so I know there was no mating. Not to sound dumb but since she wasn't mating am I correct saying she should not be getting ready for another clutch like before? I realize I should take her out of my breeding plan after this. I would like to do everything I can to save the chicks. I am prepared with a brooder and handfeeding supplies just in case.
I am looking for some helpful advice. :)Thank you for your time.
