I don't know if I am over-reacting here or not but last night I noticed that Millys' bottom looked a bit swollen and she kept sitting on the seed dish, almost squatting. I made a joke to my mum that she was "pregnant" but didn't really think anything of it. Tonight I came home from work and about half an hour ago I went upstairs and checked on them to see Milly all poofed up and holding her tail weird, sort of up in the air. Her vent looked odd too and I saw that she had a load of poop stuck to her vent feathers. I called to my mum to help me clean it off as I had to do with Daisy a few months ago, just thinking she had had too many veggies. We cleaned it up a tiny bit but when I turned her over her butt is huge!! Its all rounded and swollen looking so I automatically went "omg she is going to lay an egg!!" I am really worried for her though, terrified she could be egg bound. I really don't know what to do...and its saturday tomorrow so it would have to be emergency vet call which would cost a bomb. I want to make sure she isn't egg bound first before spending a fortune. I'm also scared that I could have hurt her by handling her, how delicate are they when they are about to lay an egg? I am always gentle but still scared I have hurt her by holding her to bathe her vent. :s Photos: What do I do?! Help!

Sounds like she's trying to lay an egg.
Keep cleaning her bum with warm water. Keep her warm, possibly give her a warm bath or some steam, give her some calcium.
Check Barrie's website. There might be something on breeding issues, egg binding etc.

This is from Barrie...
Egg Bound.
Sometimes a hen is unable to lay an egg which is mid way between the shell gland and the vent, this is often the first egg.The reason is the muscles in the vent area are not relaxed to allow the egg to pass, this often during cold conditions.Remove a egg bound hen and lubricate the vent area with warm olive oil and place her in a hospital cage or under a infra-red lamp.If this fails to work immerse her up to the chest in warm water for about a minute and return her to the heat source you have.

Sorry to hear this Rachael. It sounds to me like she is trying to lay an egg too. Is she straining at all? How active is she?
It can be stressful for a budgie to lay an egg so, as already mentioned, isolation & warmth is a good idea. Calcium is also advisable. I would also say that you need to keep the emergency vet number handy...
I really hope she will be okay.

Often they get a build up and all they need is a big wet smelly poo, a pinch of epsom salts will help release the build up ..................

bathing the vent is a good idea, a local breeder to me suggested it, the steam (or simply the heat) helps to relax the muscles, then they should lay it. I don't think she's eggbound, and i would go with barries idea . Have you saw mating or any behaviour to point toward a egg?. Edit ~ Forgot to mention, I remember my vet saying, that if you feel around the vent area gently, you should can feel the egg inside her. (If there is one ofcourse). But they are fragile, one of mine got eggbound and the vet thought that it got broken inside her, which caused infection.

Hi everyone, thank you for your advice. I have been hectic all weekend so have been unable to come onto the forum properly to reply. Milly seems back to her normal self apart from the obvious egg bum. She is active and is no longer holding her tail weird. Its hard to tell if her poops are bigger or not so I think I need to separate her from the others. I am reluctant to do this though incase it stresses her because of being apart from the others. What do you think? Separate or not? Oh and they now have calcium in the water, I went out yesterday and bought some.

My 1st budgie called Peter laid her 1st egg in 1965 and being only 12 I thought he was ill. When he laid the egg I cried. He was a she but we still called her Peter. She laid lots of eggs and my dad blew the yolks out and I still have the eggs 46 years on. Peter is my only budgie who laid eggs.
